Software Engineering Manager-Cost Management (Austin or San Antonio)

Responsibilities:

At H-E-B Digital, technology plays a critical role in optimizing what we pay for products and enabling the business to make informed cost decisions at scale. We're looking for an experienced Manager of Software Engineering to lead teams responsible for Cost Management, a strategic capability within the Merchant Technologies organization.

This team develops and supports the platforms used by Procurement Partners and Suppliers to negotiate, manage, and analyze Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). These systems directly support H-E-B's ability to identify savings opportunities, improve cost visibility, and drive reinvestment back into the business.

As the Engineering Manager, you'll lead talented engineers, partner with stakeholders across Merchant Technologies and Digital, remove roadblocks, and help drive the next generation of solutions that support one of Texas' largest and most innovative retailers.

What You'll Do
Build and Grow High-Performing Teams

• Manage and support 2 full-stack engineering squads responsible for delivering strategic cost management capabilities and modernization initiatives.
• Lead teams consisting of H-E-B Partner and contractor engineers, ensuring effective execution, collaboration, and delivery.
• Coach, mentor, and develop engineers through regular feedback, career planning, technical leadership, and growth opportunities.
• Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Remove organizational and technical obstacles that prevent teams from efficiently delivering business value.
• Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, succession planning, and talent development initiatives.
• Provide leadership across multiple workstreams, balancing modernization efforts, operational support, and strategic business priorities.

Drive Technical Excellence

• Partner closely with Product, Design, and Engineering stakeholders to prioritize work and deliver business value.
• Lead the successful execution of initiatives across multiple systems and integrations.
• Champion engineering best practices, code quality, system reliability, and operational excellence.
• Contribute to architectural decisions impacting multiple products, platforms, or teams.
• Provide leadership during complex technical investigations and critical issue resolution.
• Advocate for modern engineering standards, tools, and processes that improve team effectiveness.

Influence Across the Merchant Ecosystem

• Collaborate with leaders across Accounting, Merchants, Planning & Analysis, and Digital Technology.
• Facilitate alignment across multiple teams and stakeholder groups as well as managing relationships with Product Managers.
• Translate business challenges into actionable technical solutions.
• Communicate priorities, risks, recommendations, and progress to leadership and cross-functional partners.
• Champion solutions that improve efficiency, resilience, and operational excellence throughout the supply chain.

Support Technical Excellence

• Provide technical leadership and guidance to teams working within a modern software ecosystem.
• Influence application architecture, integration patterns, reliability, and performance improvements.
• Support design reviews, code quality initiatives, and engineering best practices.
• Help troubleshoot and resolve complex production challenges impacting critical supply chain operations.

Experience

• Significant experience leading software engineering teams in a modern technology environment.
• Proven success managing engineers, technical initiatives, and complex cross-functional projects.
• Experience developing talent through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
• Demonstrated ability to balance technical excellence with business outcomes.

Technical Leadership

• Experience leading full-stack, distributed application development using modern web technologies, scalable architectures, and engineering best practices.
• Familiarity with Angular, NestJS, GraphQL, TypeScript, and modern web application development.
• Ability to balance technical priorities with business objectives.

Leadership Skills

• Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to inspire, motivate, and align teams around shared goals.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a strategic and systems-thinking mindset.

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Leadership development experience and/or demonstrated success leading engineering teams preferred.
