Software Engineering Manager - NYC In-Office Role
What we're looking for

  • Seven or more years writing production software, including stretches where you've led or managed other engineers — ideally inside small, fast-moving companies
  • Required: prior engineering experience at a Series A or Series B company (you know what that stage actually feels like, not just in theory)
  • Hands-on builder track record across the stack, shipping and operating real systems on the web, mobile, or both
  • Real production experience integrating ML or LLM capabilities into user-facing features (substantially beyond using AI coding assistants)
  • Practical fluency with retrieval-augmented generation: picking vector stores, designing chunking and embedding approaches, and measuring retrieval quality rather than guessing at it
  • Built pipelines that turn messy, unstructured input — audio, free-form text, documents — into clean, queryable records, using speech-to-text, NLP extraction, or similar
  • Bonus: prior work in regulated domains involving sensitive personal data, consent-based capture, or compliant recording and storage
  • Owns architectural decisions end-to-end, with judgment about when to optimize for speed versus durability
  • Productive in a contemporary full-stack environment (something along the lines of Rails or another mature backend framework, React and React Native on the client side, Postgres, and a major cloud)
  • Has hired engineers, mentored them through real growth, and given honest performance feedback
  • Defaults to ownership; cares more about the outcome than about checking process boxes
  • Plainspoken communicator across engineers, product, design, and leadership
  • Energized rather than blocked by ambiguity, and willing to build the structure that's missing
