This position is a non-federal role funded through an existing agreement between NRCS and NEW Solutions. The enrollee will provide direct support to farmers and landowners, enabling the implementation of conservation practices on the ground. This role contributes to NRCS's mission by enhancing capacity in field offices and ensuring timely assistance to producers. It is designed to free up NRCS staff for emergency and high-priority responses, not to replace federal staff.

This role helps ensure continued progress on conservation planning, practice implementation, and technical assistance, especially in high-demand or disaster-affected areas. It aligns with the Administration's priorities for farmer-first, field-facing, and partner-enabled capacity expansion.

NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS). These are experienced professionals who provide technical and professional assistance to the Department of Agriculture for the Agriculture Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 year(s) of experience in conservation planning and technical concepts OR HS/GED Degree in General

  • Surveying Experience
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
  • Protracts, Conservation Desktop, CART, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Outlook
Duties:

Provide engineering technical assistance to field and/or area office as assigned; assist with status review completion, survey, develops maps, and drawings; provides assistance on conservation practice design, layout, and construction inspections. Trains new employees and interns in engineering, surveying, and technical concepts. Assists District Conservationist and Area Engineer with spot checks and other assignments as needed.

  • Explain or demonstrate to landowners or contractor?s methods of installing common conservation practices on all land uses. Includes but not limited to: forestry practices, cropland practices, animal waste practices, wildlife practices, grazing practices, engineering practices (ponds, diversions, grade stabilizations structures, heavy use area protection, pipeline, watering facilities, terraces, composters, dry stacks, etc.)   40%
  • Assists District Conservationist with design, checkout and installation of engineering & agronomic conservation practices.   40%
  • Assist Area Engineer as assigned with spot checks and other difficult surveying & design engineering projects throughout Area 2 (21 counties).   10%
  • Serves as capacity of Soil Technician, with expertise to train new employees in Lauderdale, Clarke, and Kemper Counties as well as other Area 2 offices as assigned (21 counties) on conservation and technical concepts.   10%

Other:
  • Training to be provided by Local District Conservationist and Area Engineer
  • On the job training will be provided on a as needed basis and as requested.
  • Travel Requirements: Position will require use of the GOV to perform site visits, field work associated with Farm Bill programs, to travel to provided training, and to assist with training new employees and interns across Area 2 (21 counties).
  • Overnight travel: Survey equipment, administrative files/farm bill contracts, etc.
