STARTING PAY: $16.56/hr

JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION: Solid Waste Attendants ride on the back of collection vehicles to load/unload solid wastes/recyclables. This is heavy manual work of a routine nature. The person in this job will be expected to safely perform manual tasks timely and efficiently. This person works under the direct authority of a Solid Waste Operator (vehicle driver) who will assign duties as needed to complete daily collection routes. This person will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining of solid waste vehicles and equipment. Work schedules will vary and may include nights, weekends and/or holidays and call-out in emergencies. A person in this job will perform other duties as necessary and assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Collects garbage, trash, and recyclables and assists in transporting them to a disposal/ management area.
• Reports violations of procedures and injuries to the vehicle driver.
• Assures container drop areas are clear of garbage and trash before leaving.
• Rides and loads packer-type rear-loader garbage trucks to collect garbage, trash, and recyclables.
• Cleans, maintains, and assists in the repair of assigned equipment and collection vehicles.
• Responsible for dumpster cleaning and maintenance.
• Communicates cordially with customers in route.
• Assists driver as directed.
• Must apply good judgment and common sense while performing assigned duties.
• Performs other duties that may be required at the discretion of the city.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge in the operation of compacting equipment and loaders.
• Knowledge of and/or ability to learn Post Environmental regulations and assist maintaining compliance for section.
• Skill in the safe operation and maintenance of machinery.
• Skill in the use and maintenance of hand tools.
• Ability to operate various mechanical equipment related to the job.
• Ability to supervising inmates.
• Ability to motivate others.
• Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to detail.
• Ability to record data and maintain records.
• Ability to communicate effectively.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED AS FOLLOWS:

PHYSICAL SKILLS: Use of both hands with majority of fingers. 20/40 vision (in at least one eye), and be able to hear and understand and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels (corrective devices acceptable). Motor skill ability to operate equipment without excessive accommodation, climb, crawl, stoop, etc. Ability to lift and carry up to seventy (70) pounds.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED Equivalency Certificate as issued by a State Board of Education.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Possession of a valid Florida Driver License, class "E" and possession and maintenance of a driving record which meets or exceeds minimum City driving standards.
