More About the Role:

Under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance related activities for maintaining a variety of light, medium, and heavy Diesel and gas equipment at Mecklenburg County's Solid Waste Facility located at 140 Valleydale Road, Charlotte, NC. Incumbent will diagnose problems with equipment, utilize scan-tools, lubricate machines, repair brakes, and assist with aspects of maintaining equipment such as: Roll-Off Trucks, Front- End Loader Trucks, Backhoes, Wheel Loaders, Skid Steers, Hydraulic Excavators, Tub Grinders, Small Engines, Golf Carts, Handheld Power Tools, and similar equipment. Incumbent shall also complete routine equipment inspections and perform preventive maintenance requirements safely and efficiently. At times, this position may require working outdoors and may perform manual labor tasks associated with the job, all while ensuring safety policies and procedures are followed. Welding experience is preferred.

NOTE: This position does require a CDL license, we will allow the incumbent eight-months to obtain licensure.

Position Summary

Performs responsible and skilled work engaging in solid waste equipment operation. This position, under

minimal supervision, is responsible for operating technically complex equipment and ensuring safety

procedures are followed during solid waste operations. This position is responsible for waste screening

activities, customer service interaction and may train others within this job series.

Essential Functions

Perform load inspections on waste materials such as Yard Debris, Construction and Demolition

Debris and monitors incoming loads for unacceptable materials

Operate a variety of equipment in the processing, collection and disposal of recyclables, garbage,

trash, and/or refuse. This includes large tub-grinders, angle-blade bulldozers, front-loaders and

wheel loader vehicles.

Perform complex maintenance and related care of Diesel equipment used in solid waste operations

Keep work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles

Drive semi-tractor trailers hauling materials and heavy equipment (walking floor trailers and lowboy trailers)

Assist with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools

Load and unloads heavy equipment from trucks and vehicles.

Monitor the safety of job sites and co-workers

Operate solid waste vehicles that require a CDL

Work Environment may vary based on assigned duties

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum of six years of experience

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes

Licenses and Certifications

Requires County Driving Privileges

Depending on the area of assignment, may require a Class A or B CDL with one or more of the

following endorsements, H(Hazardous Materials), N(Tank Vehicle), P (Passenger Transport), S

(School Bus/Passenger Transport), T (Double/Triples), or X (Tanker and hazardous Materials).

Depending upon the area of assignment, may require a Waste Management Operators Certificate

(Landfill) or Compost Facility Operators Certificate (Mulch Processing) or Transfer Station

Operators Certificate, as required by State regulations and facility permit requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in the waste management field and be familiar with the nomenclature of

terms, job hazards, and standard limitations of material acceptance

Equipment used in solid waste operations maintenance, and construction

Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this

equipment

Lock out Tag out procedures

Customer service methodology, and communication with customers using disposal facilities

Safe work practices and hazards associated with work

Use of the tools, equipment, supplies, and methods used in the maintenance activities

Thorough knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations

Working knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance

Working knowledge of computers

Operating large complex Diesel and hydraulic equipment

Performing work, sometimes in adverse weather conditions

Ability to interpret written plans and permit requirements of solid waste facilities

Ability to fill our daily forms in a paper or electronic format for fuel, pre/post trip of vehicles and

other needs

Ability to train others in lower classes on the safe operation of heavy equipment
