COBOL Programmer (Mainframe / AS400)

Location: Cranston, RI (Hybrid Preferred, Remote Considered)

Schedule: Monday-Friday, Core Hours 8:30 AM-4:00 PM ET

Duration: 1 year Ongoing

Compensation: $78-80 per hour with benefits

Overview

Epitec is seeking an experienced COBOL Programmer to support and enhance critical legacy applications in both IBM Mainframe and IBM iSeries (AS/400) environments. This position focuses on production support, application enhancements, interface development, database support, and modernization initiatives for long-standing enterprise systems.

The ideal candidate will have recent, hands-on experience with COBOL development, strong legacy system support experience, and the ability to work closely with both technical and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

IBM Mainframe Support (VSE / VM)

• Provide COBOL, JCL, and CICS programming support
• Maintain and enhance existing production applications
• Support applications utilizing SQL/DS, ADABAS, and VSAM databases
• Develop and support interfaces and data transfers using SFTP and FTP
• Troubleshoot production/runtime issues and partner with operations teams
• Develop and maintain technical documentation
• Generate reports and operational status updates
• Support modernization and migration initiatives

IBM iSeries / AS400 Support

• Provide COBOL programming support for System/36 and native mode environments
• Maintain and enhance existing applications
• Develop and document interfaces with external agencies and systems
• Support DB2 databases and SQL-based applications
• Troubleshoot production issues and application failures
• Maintain program, database, and interface documentation
• Assist with technical audits, reviews, and process improvements
• Contribute to modernization efforts of legacy systems

Required Qualifications

• 3-5+ years of hands-on COBOL development experience
• Experience supporting IBM Mainframe environments (VSE, VM)
• Experience with CICS and JCL
• Strong SQL and database support experience
• Experience with DB2, IBM SQL/DS, ADABAS, VSAM, or similar legacy databases
• Experience supporting AS/400 (IBM iSeries) environments
• Experience with SFTP, FTP, and ODBC integrations
• Ability to troubleshoot production and runtime issues
• Strong communication and documentation skills
• Experience using Microsoft Office, Teams, and Visio

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with SharePoint integrations from Mainframe or AS/400 environments
• Experience supporting modernization, migration, or legacy application transformation projects
• Experience with Syncsort, MacKinney Systems, or similar IBM utilities

What We're Looking For

Successful candidates will have a strong background supporting live production environments and be comfortable maintaining, enhancing, and modernizing legacy enterprise applications. Experience with both Mainframe and AS/400 environments is highly desirable.
