Sous Chef

Rocky’s of Northville | Northville, Michigan

Rocky’s of Northville is seeking an experienced Sous Chef to serve as second-in-command in our high-volume, chef-driven kitchen. This is an excellent opportunity for a culinary professional who enjoys leading a team, cooking from scratch, and contributing creatively without corporate restrictions.

Established in 1992, Rocky’s is a locally owned Northville institution known for fresh fish-seafood-steaks, and raw bar, daily specials, and custom menus printed daily. Our kitchen has a strong teaching culture and a history of developing chefs who go on to successful culinary careers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise kitchen employees per shift
  • Support the Executive Chef in daily kitchen operations
  • Train, develop, monitor, and coach kitchen staff
  • Manage closing procedures, including staff checkout, reports, and securing the restaurant
  • Assist with menu planning, daily specials, sauces, and recipe development
  • Support catering events and banquets
  • Participate in ordering, purchasing, and inventory management
  • Help manage food and labor costs
  • Maintain high standards for food quality, cleanliness, organization, and safety
  • Participate in kitchen meetings and contribute to operational decisions

 Qualifications

  • At least five years of high-volume restaurant cooking experience
  • Previous Sous Chef, kitchen leadership, or comparable supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience in white-tablecloth, upscale-casual, or high-volume fast-casual dining
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of ordering, purchasing, food costs, and labor management
  • Passion for scratch cooking, menu development, and mentoring kitchen staff
  • Ability to work primarily evening shifts, including weekends

Schedule

  • Five shifts per week
  • Approximately 45–50 hours per week
  • Primarily evening hours
  • Typically 8-10 hour shift ending at 10:30pm (weekdays), 11:30pm (weekends)
  • Weekend shifts generally end around 11:00 p.m.
  • Rocky’s is not a late-night restaurant
