The US Medical Science Liaison, Automated Identification and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Solutions (IDAST) serves as a field-based scientific expert supporting Waters Advanced Diagnostics portfolio of automated organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and resistance-related diagnostic solutions. This role is responsible for leading scientific exchange with key external stakeholders, supporting Medical Affairs initiatives, and helping translate IDAST data into clinically meaningful insights for clinical microbiology laboratories, antimicrobial stewardship programs, infectious disease clinicians, pharmacists, and health-system decision-makers. Waters positions ID/AST as an integrated solution focused on rapid identification, susceptibility testing, and resistance-related insights, distinct from the broader clinical microbiology portfolio of specimen collection, culture media, and manual microbiology products.
A key differentiator of this role is the ability to connect IDAST results to clinical interpretation, antimicrobial stewardship, resistance-informed decision-making, diagnostic stewardship, and implementation within real-world hospital and laboratory workflows. The greatest value of IDAST is achieved not only through accurate organism identification and susceptibility results, but through how those results are interpreted, communicated, and incorporated into multidisciplinary care decisions. Waters ID/AST solutions focus on timely and accurate identification/susceptibility results to support optimized therapy, antimicrobial stewardship, and action on resistance-related information.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead scientific and clinical support for Waters Advanced Diagnostics IDAST portfolio, including automated identification, susceptibility testing, and resistance-related solutions.
Execute strategic scientific, educational, and external engagement activities aligned with Medical Affairs objectives and broader business priorities.
Conduct high-quality scientific exchange with clinical microbiologists, laboratory directors, infectious disease clinicians, pharmacists, antimicrobial stewardship leaders, infection prevention stakeholders, and hospital decision-makers.
Support KOL identification, engagement, and relationship development through advisory boards, scientific meetings, educational initiatives, investigator interactions, and other compliant Medical Affairs activities.
Develop and deliver scientific education for external stakeholders and internal cross-functional teams on topics including:
o organism identification and susceptibility testing principles
o resistance interpretation and stewardship relevance
o clinical utility of IDAST
o workflow integration and laboratory implementation
o appropriate interpretation and communication of IDAST results
Serve as a scientific partner to customers by translating IDAST performance characteristics and workflow advantages into clinical and operational relevance, including implications for antimicrobial optimization, resistance reporting, stewardship strategy, and hospital decision-making. Water s ID/AST positioning emphasizes therapy optimization, antimicrobial stewardship, and informatics-enabled resistance tracking.
Monitor and communicate scientific literature, competitive developments, evolving resistance trends, susceptibility-testing practices, and changes in the infectious disease and stewardship landscape relevant to IDAST.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Medical Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Commercial, Market Access, and other internal partners to support field medical strategy, scientific communication, and evidence generation.
Capture field insights related to unmet needs, evidence gaps, implementation barriers, customer perceptions, and resistance/stewardship priorities to inform medical strategy and future evidence-generation planning.
