General Role and Responsibilities:

The Sign Language Interpreter provides services for deaf and hard of hearing students in an educational environment. This may include classrooms, field trips, assemblies, club meetings, extracurricular activities, IEP meetings and other educational settings. The interpreter facilitates communication using sign language and spoken English.

General Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Hold an Educational Interpreter Certificate and maintain license
  • RID Certification or EIPA rating of 3.5 or higher

Specific Responsibilities in This Position:

  • Facilitate effective communication between sign language and spoken English

( \u2022 Understand the ethical behavior set by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, RID, and adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct, CPC

  • Maintain highest standard of professional behavior at all times including punctuality, preparedness and collaborative interaction with colleagues as well as accurate record keeping
  • Relay concepts and ideas between languages as assessments, books publications, or web pages.
  • Monitor student comprehension and adjust interpreting style accordingly
  • Use the appropriate' visual modality while interpreting at the child's language level
  • Use/Prepare in advance for specific content and vocabulary presented in the

educational setting

  • Apply for and maintain an Educational Interpreter Permit through the Indiana State Department of Education
  • Foster student independence by reducing the level of extraneous support provided as students mature.
  • Supports the school environment through a thorough understanding of school policies and procedures
  • Facilitates social interaction and teaches sign language to staff and students.
  • Supports student's language development
  • \u2022 Collaborates with the student's education team keeping the Teacher for the Deaf

and Hard of Hearing informed of any concerns and general progress

  • Ensures that environmental accommodations are available to the student including lighting, seating,
  • Helps school staff secure accessible media
  • Provide guidance for the student to learn the role of the educational interpreter in various environments as well as the difference in roles of
  • Assists with hearing assistive technology maintenance
  • Other as directed by educational staff

Specific Skills and Knowledge for this position:
