Job Title: Educational Aide, Special Education (Life Skills) Contract Days: 187 Reports to: Assigned Ca mpus Pay Grade: CIS 02 Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt Funding Source: Local Revision Date: April 2021 Primary Purpose: Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self -help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Associates Degree or 48 hours of college credit Valid Texas educational aide certificate Special Knowledge/Skills: Ability to work with children with disabilities Ability to follow verbal and written instructions Ability to communicate effectively Experience: Two years experience working with children Major Responsibilities and Duties: • Help mee t the individual needs of students, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning them, and signing or interpreting instructions for them, etc. • Help students take care of physical needs and personal care including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene. • Help manage the behavior of assigned students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed. • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Educational Aide, Special Education Page 2 of 3 • Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher. • Assist assigned students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students. • Maintain confidentiality. • Participate in professional d evelopment programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. • Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher. • Perform other duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities: None Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors : Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision -making. Frequent in -district and occasional in -state or national travel. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and main tain workplace safety.
