Special Education Assistant

Evansville Community School District (ECSD) is a PreK-12 district located in historic Evansville, Wisconsin. Position Summary:

Special Education Assistants play a critical role in supporting students with disabilities across academic, behavioral, and social-emotional domains. Working under the direction of certified teachers and specialists, the assistant helps implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), facilitates student engagement in inclusive settings, and ensures a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for all students.

This is a student-centered role that requires flexibility, patience, and a collaborative spirit. Duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive-other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create and maintain a safe, supportive learning environment that allows students to reach their full potential.
• Implement IEP goals and strategies as directed by special education teachers, therapists (speech/language, OT, PT), and consultants.
• Support students with academic, social, behavioral, and emotional needs.
• Assist with personal care tasks, including bathrooming, feeding, lifting, and transfers, as necessary.
• Facilitate student inclusion in general education classrooms
• Supervise students in structured and unstructured settings such as lunch, recess, study hall, field trips, and transitions between activities.
• Accurately maintain records and documentation as required.
• Uphold student confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and district policies.
• Follow student schedules and behavior intervention plans consistently.
• Provide clerical and instructional assistance to special education staff as assigned.
• Participate in professional development and training relevant to the role.
• Provide specially designed transportation services, when required.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree or postsecondary coursework in education or related field preferred.
• Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities, is highly desirable.
• Ability to lift, transfer, and assist students with mobility or personal care needs.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting diverse learners.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow school and district policies.
