Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Pay Family: Clerical/Paraprofessional

Pay Grade: 03

Minimum Hourly Rate: $17.60

Duty Days: 187 days per year

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assist special education teacher to provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education setting in a specialized, self-contained classroom for students on the Autism Spectrum. Assist in implementation of the Individual Education Plans (IEP), classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Minimum of Associates Degree, or 48 Semester Hours of successful college credit or, passing rigorous content-oriented exam, and assessment
  • Eligible to receive valid Texas educational aide certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Ability to enter data into an electronic system using a computer

MAJOR REPOSONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Support

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help teacher manage instructional programming for individual students'' severe language, adaptive delays and behavior needs.
  • Provide reteaching and guided practice opportunities for students.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Student Management

  • Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
  • Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to develop skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Assist students with personal care including bathroom needs, and personal hygiene. Follow toileting schedules as outlined, as appropriate.?
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Collect and submit data in digital platform

Other

  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Participate in staff development training programs specific to children with a variety of disabilities including but not limited to autism, speech, and behavior.
  • Attends required CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training provided by the district within department timeline in the event of involvement in a restraint.
  • Complete the pre-selected 40-hour Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Training via digital platform with prescribed deadline as defined by the Department and the Innovative Grant for Autism Services.
  • Conduct all X-logs and SHARS duties within timelines as required by the Department of Special Education.
  • Participate in annual X-logs, and IEP data management training.
  • Provide Personal Care services as identified in applicable student IEPs.
  • Enter services provided into X-logs within prescribed timelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interprets policy, procedures and data; coordinates district functions; maintains emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions.
