Job Goal:

To work closely with students with disabilities on a regular basis in order to provide them with the educational, physical, social/behavioral, and emotional support they need in order to appropriately participate in and benefit from the District''s regular and special education activities including educational and co-curricular programs.

Position Responsibilities:

• Assists with the physical and health needs of assigned student(s) including but not limited to: feeding, toileting, transferring, positioning, such physical tasks as putting on and taking off of outerwear, moving from room to room, grooming/personal care, and basic health/medical care (under the supervision of a school nurse as appropriate/required).

• Helps with the loading/unloading of students from vehicles as needed, and supervises students while being transported by district vehicles as assigned.

• Assists the supervising teacher(s) in the collection and preparation of instructional material and equipment (including adaptive technology).

• Hear/assist the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, while guiding and helping them but not teaching them.

• Assists with the evaluation, monitoring, and supervision of students' work.

• Assists students in performing educational or recreational activities as initiated by the supervising teacher/specialist.

• Implement behavior intervention/management/modification techniques/programs as structured and monitored by the supervising teacher/specialist for individual students.

• Attend professional development meetings/workshops as appropriate/required.

• Respects the confidentiality of information about students, and communicates progress or concerns about students to parents or staff only with the prior and specific authorization of the supervising teacher.

• Under the supervision of the assigned special education teacher, work with an individual student or small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.

• Accompany the assigned student(s) on field trips or when trips to the office, bathroom, classrooms, or the school nurse are necessary.

• Establish as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s).

• Serve as a resource person, if and when requested, to the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team when conferring about one of the assigned students.

• Perform special health care procedures delegated by the school nurse such as tube feeding, Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC), and suctioning.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, specialist, and/or administrative staff.
