John Long Middle School is seeking paraprofessionals for the 2026-27 school year. These positions report on a student-day calendar with time off from early June through August. We are looking for positive, energetic, compassionate, and dedicated individuals to join our Special Education team.

Paraprofessionals have a range of responsibilities working with students with special needs. These responsibilities can include, but are not limited to: assisting students with academic and behavioral support, assisting personal hygiene care, helping with recess and lunch, eating, feeding, dressing, toileting and other basic care skills and tasks as necessary, assisting teachers in reinforcing skills as demonstrated by physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech/language therapist, escorting to and from buses, assisting with any special medical needs, and providing documentation of completion. The district provides specialized and ongoing training.

Responsibilities:

  1. Work individually or in small groups with students at the direction of the special education teacher.

  2. Prepare materials for special education teachers or students, such as, but not limited to:

  • Copy materials
  • Adapt worksheets, tests, and instructional materials with teacher direction
  • Support the teacher in the maintenance of student records
  • Prepare classroom support materials
  • Prepare and put up bulletin boards or other classroom materials
  • Operate equipment used in classrooms or for general clerical/office work
  1. Tutor students and assist with homework as needed.

  2. Help students organize materials, plan, and complete assignments.

  3. Read, interpret, and/or modify (under teacher direction) tests for students in regular and/or special education settings.

  4. Assist special education teachers in communicating with regular education staff.

  5. Support substitute teachers in the special education classroom by providing pertinent information regarding specific students and classroom management.

  6. Accompany students to and in regular education classrooms and activities, assisting with classroom tasks and behavior management.

  7. Provide study hall and non-classroom supervision as appropriate.

  8. Other duties as assigned regarding specific classroom or individual student needs:

  • Assist with bus and/or hall supervision
  • Assist students with personal hygiene care
  • Assist students with toileting needs
  • Assist students to and from buses
  • Assist with recess or outdoor play supervision, field trips, assemblies, and emergency drills
  • Assist students with eating, feeding, dressing, toileting, and other basic care skills and tasks
  • Assist teacher in reinforcing skills as demonstrated by physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech/language therapist
  • Assist with appropriate wheelchair or other transportation needs
  • Assist with training and supervision by the school nurse, provide and document designated nursing procedures
  • Provide documentation for Medicaid reimbursement and/or other programs as requested
  1. Maintain confidentiality in all matters.

  2. Other duties as assigned on behalf of special education students; if time allows, other regular education duties as assigned.

The Paraprofessionals report to special Education teacher(s) as assigned, the building Principal, and the Director of Special Education and Pupil Services.
