Meeting the Needs of Every Learner, Every Day:

McFarland School District is seeking highly dynamic candidates to fill an opening for a Special Education Teacher beginning in the 2026-27 school year. We aspire to hire individuals who can help us work toward our mission of meeting the needs of every learner, every day, and our vision of being an equitable and inclusive community committed to student belonging, achievement, and growth.

What Your Day Will Look Like:

This is a cross categorical special education position. Your day will be spent supporting students on your caseload (typically 12 or fewer students) across different subject areas and individualized needs including academic, social emotional, and behavioral needs. This position primarily supports students in English classes currently and sometimes teaches a self contained intervention literacy class. Depending on the schedule and staff strengths/preferences, case managers may support in other core areas. There may also be a small group study hall focused on providing specially designed instruction, academic support, or small group interventions.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • Passion, knowledge and skill in working with students with special needs.
  • Commitment to a student-centered approach
  • Collaborative, reflective nature and commitment to professional growth;
  • Interest in being a part of a high-achieving, high-energy team in a terrific school
  • Has strong cross-categorical teaching experience at the high school level
  • Has the ability to differentiate curriculum, instruction, and assessment using evidence-based instructional strategies, accommodations, and modifications
  • Has the ability to manage student behaviors collaboratively with other school staff and can adequately support students social-emotional needs
  • Is flexible to work across multiple grade-level and content areas
  • Has excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and electronic)
  • Possess strong time management and organizational skills
  • Has experience with the continuum of inclusive practices, including co-teaching models
  • Has strong collaboration skills, including partnering with families and service providers
  • Has the ability to provide direction, support, and management of multiple educational assistants
  • Knowledge and experience with Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) and Multi-Level Systems of Support (MLSS)

Why People Stay:

Through one-on-one interviews, McFarland teachers say making deep connections with colleagues (including administrators) and students helps them feel supported in McFarland. Teachers who have worked in other districts noted how McFarland class sizes are lower, special education caseloads are smaller, team budgets are larger, and they are glad to work in a community that supports schools, has a positive climate, and a school board that respects teachers. We have a full-time librarian, social worker, school psychologist, and at least one school counselor in each building.

The District:

The McFarland School District stands out as one of the top academic districts in Dane County and Wisconsin, offering a strong educational foundation that families and educators are proud of. With an average enrollment of 2,100 to 2,400 students, McFarland is large enough to provide a comprehensive EC-12 academic and co-curricular program, yet small enough to focus on each student''s unique needs. Known statewide for its welcoming atmosphere and student-centered approach, McFarland consistently attracts top-quality staff who enhance our vibrant, thriving community.

What We Offer:

The McFarland School District is committed to supporting the well-being of its employees by offering a comprehensive benefits package. Our goal is to provide you and your family with resources that promote health, financial security, and work-life balance.

This summary highlights the key components of our benefits offerings, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other valuable benefit options.
