POSITION: Special Education Teacher - Adaptive Physical Education 1.0 FTE

Plymouth-Canton is seeking to employ culturally responsive educators who will be able to support and sustain equity-focused instruction for all learners. These educators create high achieving learning environments. They identify and systematically apply differentiated instruction and assessment that improves achievement for all learners from all racial groups.

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher provides individualized physical education instruction or services to students receiving special education who qualify for adaptive PE. Adapted physical education teachers evaluate and assess motor competency, physical fitness, and skills in play, recreation, leisure, and sports. APE is a mandated related service for students with disabilities who require specially designed instruction in physical education to meet their unique needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A valid Michigan teaching certificate with Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (SP) endorsement.
• R 340.1797 Teachers of students requiring adapted physical education: This rule defines the requirements for teachers, stating they must hold a valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in physical education, special education, or both, and possess at least 20 semester hours of credit in specialized areas (e.g., knowledge of disabilities, assessment skills).
• Consideration will be given if enrolled in a program leading to full SP endorsement.
• Knowledge in Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) and/or Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE).
• Significant experience and/or coursework in related fields.

RELEVANT UNDERSTANDINGS AND COMPETENCIES:

• Provide consultation to administrators, instructional staff, students, and families regarding evidence-based practices for the development of students' motor activities, including recreation and leisure time activities.
• Provide direct instruction in recreation and leisure time activities for students with disabilities ages 5-26.
• Develop appropriate, measurable IEP goals and objectives as a member of the IEP team (if applicable).
• Plan the Physical Education program to meet students' needs, interests, and abilities.
• Provide ongoing evaluation of student progress towards goals and objectives.
• Consultation with physical education teachers on adaptive techniques for students with adapted physical education needs.
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly in written and oral communication.
• Create inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities to participate with peers in general education activities.
• Maintain physical education equipment, inventory, and instruct students in proper use of equipment.
• Able to provide a flexible, stable and pleasant learning environment that is student-centered while maintaining appropriate classroom management.
• Familiarity with culturally relevant pedagogy and be able to include this pedagogy in his/her teaching practices.
• Knowledge of positive behavioral supports and interventions.
• Effectively deliver instruction, maintain classroom environment, prepare and plan for needs of students and demonstrate professional responsibilities.
• Maintain student records, attendance, performance and progress.
• Help develop, implement and evaluate individualized behavior management plans and strategies.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues in professional learning communities.
• Knowledge of and practical experience in research based instructional practices.
• Collaborate in grade level teams to discuss student work, and share best practices.
• Participate in on-going professional development in the spirit of continuous improvement.
• Provide supervision and oversight to classroom staff and students throughout the assigned workday.
• Performs other duties and assumes responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
• Follow the schedule outlined by the Special Education Supervisor.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.
