Position Details

Position Title: Teacher Elementary Teacher Autism Spectrum Disorder

Department / Division: Special Education

Reports To: Director of Special Education or designated supervisor

Position Summary

The teacher for the Elementary Special Education ASD Elementary classroom is someone who is vibrant and has a passion for innovative ideas and operates a classroom for assigned students with disabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides at a minimum, the following curriculum: basic academic skills, prevocational and vocational skill development and social skill development.
  • Organizes and plans activities for instructional support staff, directs and monitors instructional support staff and volunteers in the classroom.
  • Develops and implement goals and objectives in accordance with special education rules and regulations and with students IEPs.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents / guardians.
  • Participates in IEPs and other meetings as necessary.
  • Provides direct instruction which is carried out within settings in which the students are and will be expected to function.
  • Provides direct instruction that enables home, school, and community to work together to integrate each student as much as possible into major life roles.
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining a budget for classroom / staff functions.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with all staff, families, local districts and community agencies.
  • Maintains the appropriate documentation, paperwork and progress reports.
  • Attends staff meetings and professional development as appropriate.
  • Assists the student in making a realistic assessment of his/her abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with these abilities
  • Evaluates student progress based on work output, and observation, determines goals, objectives and directions.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in education or a field related to special education from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate.
  • Special Education Endorsement in Autism (ASD); SV Endorsement acceptable or ISD Approved waiver.
  • Satisfactory experience interacting with individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and to establish and maintain effective scheduling.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively work with students, parents, staff, other agencies and the general public.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to word process, utilize software applications and use electronic mail.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see and hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move 60 pounds or more. Occasional travel may be required. Noise levels are typically moderate.
