    Job Title: Special Education Teacher

    Reports To: Principal and Supervisor

    General Responsibilities:

    The primary responsibility of the Special Education Teacher is to plan and implement an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each Special Education student.

    Performance Responsibilities:

    A. PLANNING

    Conducts initial and/or review IEP conferences as appropriate

    Develops appropriate short-term objectives as indicated by annual

    goals and continuous assessment.

    • Plans effectively for instruction by designing daily lesson plans

    which incorporate short-term objectives.

    B. MANAGEMENT

    Insures appropriate scheduling of students into regular classes as

    indicated on the IEP.

    • Manages learner behavior to provide productive learning

    opportunities.

    Conducts periodic conferences concerning student progress with

    parents and regular education teachers where indicated.

    Completes and maintains in timely manner all required records, such

    as: monthly class rolls, IEP forms, confidential records,

    requisitions, progress reports, etc.

    Completes re-evaluation forms in timely manner according to Pupil

    Appraisal requirements.

    • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate

    to the functioning levels of students.

    • Maximizes amount of time available for instruction.

    C. INSTRUCTION

    Implements short-term objectives as indicated on IEP.

    • Delivers instruction effectively.
    • Presents appropriate content.
    • Provides opportunities for student involvement in the learning

    process.

    • Assesses student progress on an on-going basis.

    D. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

    Displays evidence of professional growth and participation in special

    education in-service sessions.

    Demonstrates an awareness of current trends in Special Education.

    • Plans for professional self-development.
    • Indicates the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The Special Education Teacher will work in a school setting in a climate-controlled environment adhering to School Board energy policy and in the outside areas which are subject to climate extremes. Work day consists of teacher hours at assigned school site. The special education teacher may sometimes work evenings as required by job responsibilities.

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS

    A Special Education Teacher must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing. Must have ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system and must be able to communicate successfully with students, parents, school personnel, and the community.

    EQUIPMENT USED

    Telephone, audio-visual equipment, classroom computer, copy machine, laminator, calculator, and other appropriate machines.

    PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT

    Standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting 20 pounds must be raised, especially for diapering, etc. Must be able to operate classroom equipment. Mobility skills are

    necessary to access a variety of work locations. The teacher must have the ability to provide their own transportation to school, work locations, and meeting sites.

    MENTAL INVOLVEMENT

    Must be able to plan and implement appropriate educational programs for all students. Must be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions. Must keep accurate, up-to-date written records. Must be able to comply with state and parish regulations. Must be able to utilize effective classroom management techniques.

    HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT

    Must be able to work cooperatively with students, parents, school personnel, and the community. Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept commendations and recommendations.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Possess a minimum of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college/university. Must hold a valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate with special education requirements.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret government regulations and the like. Ability to write reports, memos, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff, superintendent, school board, news media, and the public.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee must occasionally lift or move light weight up to 20 pounds.
