DESCRIPTION:

Darlington Elementary-Middle School (DEMS) is excited to welcome a compassionate, skilled, and collaborative Special Education Teacher to our team for the 2026-2027 school year. This full-time position offers a meaningful opportunity to support young adolescents with a wide range of abilities and learning needs within a cross-categorical service delivery model.

As a Middle School Special Education Teacher, you may support students in grades 5-8 across academic, functional, behavioral, and social-emotional domains during a pivotal stage of their development. This role includes providing instruction and support in general education classrooms, resource settings, and self-contained environments with modified curriculum, as appropriate to student needs. You will collaborate closely with fellow teachers, support staff, and related service providers to ensure students can access instruction, make progress toward IEP goals, and build the foundational skills necessary for a successful transition to high school.

In addition to supporting academic growth, this position emphasizes fostering self-advocacy, independence, and positive peer relationships. Instruction may occur through co-teaching, small-group instruction, individualized support, and structured intervention settings. We are seeking an educator who values collaboration, builds strong relationships with students and families, and is committed to inclusive practices and equity for all learners.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate:

  • Instructional Expertise: Experience teaching and supporting middle school students in general education classrooms as well as resource or self-contained settings with modified curriculum.

  • Differentiated Learning: Successful experience working with diverse learners and implementing differentiated instruction, accommodations, and effective teaching strategies.

  • Compliance & IEPs: Knowledge of special education evaluations, eligibility determinations, and the development and implementation of the IEP process.

  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with general education teachers, special education peers, paraprofessionals, support staff, and related service providers in inclusive and resource settings.

  • Behavioral Support: Familiarity with functional behavior assessments (FBAs), behavior intervention plans (BIPs), and data-driven instructional or behavioral practices.

  • Communication: Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to develop and maintain positive partnerships with parents and families.

  • Professional Mindset: A flexible, student-centered, and team-oriented mindset, with a strict commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of student records.

  • Core Values: A strong belief in equity, inclusion, and the unique potential of every middle school learner.
