Position Overview: The Special Education Teacher understands the unique learning, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students with disabilities and provides high-quality, specially designed instruction aligned to individual student needs. This position is responsible for effective IEP development and case management, delivery of instruction in inclusive, small-group, and individual settings, as well as collaboration with general education staff, related service providers, and families to ensure student access, progress, and success.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensure in Special Education for the appropriate grade level(s)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education law and compliance, including IEP development, implementation, and progress monitoring
  • Strong understanding of specially designed instruction (SDI), accommodations, and modifications within inclusive environments
  • Ability to use student data to develop measurable goals, plan instruction, and monitor progress
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to lead IEP meetings and communicate clearly with families and staff
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
  • Commitment to continuous professional learning and reflective practice
  • Knowledge of PBIS and MLSS/MTSS frameworks (preferred)
  • Commitment to inclusive practices and positive student outcomes

  • Demonstrates knowledge of disability-specific instructional practices, curriculum standards, and student learning needs. Applies this knowledge to design meaningful, rigorous, and accessible learning experiences.

Instructional Planning:

Develops and implements instruction aligned to IEP goals, grade-level standards, and student data. Plans for accommodations, modifications, and instructional supports within general education and special education settings.

Instructional Delivery:

Provides effective specially designed instruction using evidence-based strategies, flexible grouping, and assistive or instructional technology as appropriate. Supports student engagement, independence, and skill development.

Assessment for and of Learning:

Uses formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress toward IEP goals and academic standards. Collects and analyzes data to adjust instruction and accurately report progress to families and IEP teams.

Learning Environment:

Creates a safe, respectful, and structured learning environment that supports diverse learners. Implements proactive behavior supports and collaborates with staff to promote positive behavior and student regulation.

Professionalism and Collaboration:

Adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards related to special education. Effectively case manages students, completes required documentation, collaborates with colleagues and families, and engages in professional growth focused on improving outcomes for students with disabilities.
