Role Description The Special Education Teacher position is a full-time, on-site position located in Wilmington, NC. This role includes planning and delivering individualized and small-group instruction for students with autism, using evidence-based strategies and accommodations. Daily responsibilities involve developing and implementing academic and social-emotional lessons and activities, monitoring progress, collecting data, and adjusting instruction based on student needs. The teacher will collaborate closely with families, paraprofessionals, therapists, and other staff to support academic, social, and behavioral growth. Additional duties include maintaining accurate documentation, participating in team meetings, supporting transitions and daily routines, and contributing to a safe, inclusive classroom environment.


Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Autism and Special Education practices, including experience supporting students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.
  • Strong Teaching skills with Middle School and elementary-age learners, including lesson planning, differentiation, and classroom management.
  • Effective Communication skills for collaborating with students, families, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Relevant state teaching license or eligibility for Special Education certification or equivalent experience
  • Ability to maintain a positive, structured classroom environment and support social-emotional learning.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education or a related field preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and experience with behavior support strategies are beneficial.

  2. CALENDAR/SCHEDULE
    • SEAA operates on a modified year-round schedule. It is approximately 9 weeks on, 2 week Fall and Spring breaks, 3 week Winter Break, and 5 week Summer break.
    • After school, intersession camps, and parents’ nights out are offered if staff seeks additional income and if opportunities are available.
  3. PTO/HOLIDAYS
    • Employees receive 5 paid days/year for sickness or requests off

  4. TYPICAL DAY
    • Teachers hours are 8am-4pm (Mondays) and 8am-3pm (Tues-Friday) (we ask that teachers arrive between 7:45-8:00am to be here by 8:00am)
      • Staff meetings are Mondays from 3pm-4pm. 
    • Students arrive 8:15-8:30am. Academics are completed from 8:45am-12pm. Afternoons are for lunch, recess, LIFE (social skills instruction), electives, and other social activities. Dismissal is 2:25-2:45pm.
    • Fridays are dedicated to Science and History during academic times
    • After Hours Special Events include Haunted House, Prom, and Graduation.
  5. CASELOAD
    • Upper elementary and middle school classrooms have 8-10 students and High School classes have 8-12 students.during academic times. 
    • Students enrolled at SEAA are diagnosed with Level 1 and Level 2 autism. They are required to be able to participate in a small group, not have aggressive behavior, and use the bathroom independently. 
    • SEAA does not have IEP meetings, but we do meet with parents at least once a year to review progress, goals, accommodations, etc. We also require frequent parent communication via text and phone call- we use WhatsApp for all daily communication.
  6. PAPERWORK
    • Attendance and grades (quarterly progress reports)
    • Students complete a LIFE portfolio each year. 
    • High School teachers assist with transcripts.
    • Students take the CAT test every year as our required standardized assessment.
