SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education, the testing teacher consultant will assist in assessing/evaluating students for special education eligibility and assist in determining what issues are affecting the students' learning. The teacher consultant will work closely with local district teachers, administrators, and related service staff to develop Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students who qualify for special education. The teacher consultant for testing will also assist in identifying academic targets for students and what supports students need to be successful academically.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrate an understanding of current federal and state laws, and rules regarding child find, evaluation, eligibility, Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and implementation.

• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, knowledge of assessments and diagnosis and research related to learning, instructional strategies, and classroom management.
• Assist teams with the Review of Existing Evaluation Data (REED) process, including coordination of meetings, and by completing student record reviews.
• Ability to conduct achievement assessments and classroom observations to assist evaluation teams.
• Ability to assist teachers with implementing strategies to create success for students with disabilities.
• Ability to monitor students' data to demonstrate academic and behavioral growth.
• Communicate individual plans for students to staff to facilitate a whole school approach to student improvement.
• Work in collaboration with school administration to address the needs of our most at-risk learners, with the focus on improving academics.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm and the interpersonal skills to relate with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
• Provide staff development to promote increased competency and improved student outcomes.
• Attend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees, including MTSS teams.
• Participate in faculty, school, parent, and community meetings and programs with the intent to share available resources.
• Assist families with finding necessary resources.
• Must be organized and able to meet timelines and monthly deadlines.
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Demonstrate the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
• Other duties assigned by the director and/or supervisor as deemed necessary and appropriate which are in accordance with contractual rules and legal guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Possess a master's degree in special education.

Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with a special education endorsement. (LD preferred).

Possess full approval or qualify for full approval as a Teacher Consultant in Michigan.

Completed a minimum of three years of satisfactory teaching experience, not less than two years of which shall be in teaching students with a disability in a special education classroom.

EXPERIENCE:

Demonstrated ability working with a wide age range of children and young adults.

Demonstrated instructional consultation skills including outstanding organization and communication.

Evidence of the ability to work with a wide variety of parents, professional staff and non-professional staff.

Previous experience in Collaborative Evaluation Teams.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Demonstrated skills in special education programming and assessment
• Demonstrated organizational and coordination skills
• Knowledge of casework and client interviewing techniques
• Knowledge of community organizations and services available to individuals with disabilities
• Knowledge of the principles and methods used in teaching exceptional children
• Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to special education and compliance
• Knowledge of recent developments and current literature in the field of special education
• Effective facilitation, coaching, and leadership skills at a group and individual level
• Ability to plan and conduct training conferences pertaining to special education for administrators and teachers

CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE:

• Must maintain current State of Michigan Teacher or Teacher Consultant endorsement in an area of special education in the State of Michigan, or meet the requirements for this endorsement

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

• This position will require that the employee provide his or her own transportation for job-related travel.
• The employee must exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with students, staff and operations.
