Job Title: Special Inspector

Job Description

A growing engineering and testing organization is seeking a Special Inspector to support a rapidly expanding portfolio of UDOT roadway projects across Southern and Northern Utah, including Cedar City, St. George, and surrounding areas. This role offers flexibility in where you live, meaningful long-term project opportunities, and the chance to work with a tight-knit, field-driven inspection team during a period of sustained growth. This position is ideal for an inspector who is dependable, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in the field while collaborating closely with field engineers and resident engineers. The Special Inspector provides both hands-on field inspection support and coordination with service center leadership to ensure projects are delivered safely, accurately, and in compliance with plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform UDOT roadway and construction inspections within current certification and experience areas.
  • Inspect a variety of work including roadway, bridge elements, utilities (including fiber optic conduit), and related infrastructure.
  • Complete daily inspection, testing, and quantity documentation using an iPad or tablet-based system.
  • Validate quantities, review plans proactively, and identify potential issues before they impact schedule or quality.
  • Conduct ACI concrete testing and soil compaction testing as required by project scope.
  • Maintain required certifications; ACI, ICC, and UDOT certifications may be in progress at time of hire.
  • Support and coordinate with field engineers, resident engineers, and other inspectors (typically 1-2 days/week onsite together).
  • Maintain a company vehicle while on assignment and complete required vehicle reporting.
  • Assist with technician training and field documentation as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned based on project needs.

Essential Skills

  • Experience performing UDOT construction inspections or private roadway construction inspections.
  • Ability to work confidently in the field, sometimes as the sole inspector on a project.
  • Strong common sense, professionalism, and sound judgment in contractor and client interactions.
  • Comfortable reading plans, tracking quantities, and documenting work in real time.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Willingness to work project-dependent schedules, including potential overtime (50-55 hours/week on many roadway projects).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • ICC Reinforced Concrete and/or Structural Masonry certification and/or ACI Level II certification.
  • ACI Certifications.
  • UDOT Certifications (Level I - IV).
