Job Description and Duties
Come to a place that values integrity, professional development, and a team atmosphere. Cal/OSHA's Bureau of Investigations is looking for talented, independent, and creative individuals to assist with criminal investigations in one of several of our offices located around the state.
Under the close supervision of the Supervising Special Investigator I for the Bureau of Investigations (BOI), within the Division of Occupational Safety & Health (Cal/OSHA), the Special Investigator Assistant assists with criminal field investigations in an assigned geographical area involving violations of occupational safety and health standards, orders, special orders and Section 25910 of the Health and Safety Code in which there is a serious injury or death involving occupational safety and health violations. The incumbent will primarily assists with BOI cases in which there are Regulatory, General, and/or no citations issued to the employer. The incumbent will also provide assistance to the Special Investigators and Supervising Special Investigator I in the furtherance of a criminal investigation, including surveillance, evidence gathering, interviews, and processing a crime scene. Individuals appointed to this classification perform a variety of duties, such as processing, preserving and collecting evidence, obtaining statements from witnesses, victims and suspects; and preparing cases, including identifying suspects, recommending charges, and contacting Law Enforcement for referred case updates.

The incumbent works a minimum of 40 hours a week, over 50% in the field, which may require driving long distances at various hours of the day and night, bending, stooping, walking and carrying investigative equipment and evidence. Incumbent's priorities may quickly change due to need to respond to fatal incidents. Incumbents, at incident scenes, are exposed to loud noises, dust, construction/manufacturing equipment, hazardous environments, bodily fluids, body parts, and deceased victims. While in the office, incumbents are in an air conditioned, high-rise building with elevator access, in a cubicle with artificial lighting. This position requires instate travel, including one to three night overnight trips within California, based on assignments, and as determined according to the needs of the Department.
Candidates must possess a valid California driver's license and be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
