Who we are and what we do:

The Tennessee Department of Correction operates and oversees 14 adult prisons across the state, housing some 21,000 offenders. In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state.

Job Overview:

The Correctional Tactical Officer 3 position is assigned to the Special Operations Unit (SOU) and is the specialized tactical response unit of the TDOC. The Tactical Officer 3 is a Commander position on Strike Force, which oversees the day-to-day operations of SOU Tactical Officers belonging to Strike Force and the various operating components of statewide Facility Based Tactical Squads when in an activated status. This position is based out of Nashville, Tennessee, with significant travel throughout east and west Tennessee.

Key Responsibilities:

The Correctional Tactical Officer 3 position engages in strategic planning for the implementation of accountability strategies, both for staff and for systems in place, and the development and implementation of training and action plans to address any identified issues that may occur within the TDOC Special Operations Unit. This position is tasked with creating efficiencies while ensuring the fundamentals of the units' operational status are addressed each day.

The Correctional Tactical Officer 3 acts as a representative of the Special Operations Unit Director and the Tennessee Department of Correction in performing the important and confidential duties that involve contact work with law enforcement, court appearances, community leaders, offenders, their families, victims, and the general public. This position is expected to be a resource in providing support for staff at all levels of the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires at least (3) months of related administrative and supervisory experience within the Special Operations Unit.

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or an accredited GED

  • No criminal felony conviction(s)

  • Successful completion of TDOC firearms qualification courses required and must be able to carry a weapon while on duty.

Work experience:

  • 1 year of experience as a Correctional Tactical Officer 2.

All applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age, and possess a valid Tennessee drivers license at the time of hire. Applicants must successfully pass a structured interview, meet medical and psychological qualifications. Applicants must be able to be on call 24 hours / 7 days a week; nights / weekends / holidays / overnight stays and must be a proficient report writer, proficient in Microsoft Office.
