Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of General Services (DGS), Protective Services Division (PSD), Uniform Operations Branch. The PSD is responsible for ensuring security of leased and owned property; protecting the lives of persons; and preserving the peace of those Individuals that work and visit within them. This is a Term armed uniformed Special Police Officer, with primary duties of providing security and protection.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Special Police Officer provides access control functions and general protective measures for buildings. Operates metal detectors and X-ray machines at District Government facilities where equipment issued for controlling access; and operates sophisticated Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), in addition to other electronic security devices. Patrols entrances to restricted parking areas in compliance with special identification and control procedures, safety measures, and posted regulations. Checks identification of vehicles, confirms admittance, and directs and controls movement of personnel and vehicles. Issues parking tickets for violations when necessary and within jurisdictional responsibility.

The incumbent responds to reports of crimes and criminal reports within the jurisdiction of authority. For offenses not within the jurisdictional and/or legislative authority of the PSPD, the incumbent makes immediate notification to the D.C. Metropolitan Police (MPD) of the offense and action taken. Patrols designated areas on foot inspecting the buildings and adjacent grounds to prevent unauthorized removal of D.C. property and access to restricted rooms and areas. Reports fires, accidents and safety hazards; checks and secures exterior of the building's entrances and windows; detects and apprehends unauthorized personnel; and notes any unusual appearance or deviation from normal operations

Qualifications and Education

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression.

Licensures and Certifications

Incumbent must maintain a valid driver's license from their state of residence.

Incumbent must satisfactorily complete all mandatory training and examinations, including those pertaining to DC Code and DC Municipal Regulations, with a minimum passing score of 70%. Incumbent must successfully complete a Protective Services Division (PSD) approved, training academy as condition of continued employment. Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Special Police Officer (SPO) commission issued by the Government of the District of Columbia, authorizing the carrying of a weapon. Incumbent must maintain a working phone for use in the event it becomes necessary to call the officer back to duty.

Work Environment/Conditions

The work to be performed is unpredictable and at times dangerous. The incumbent may be exposed to any weather condition for extended period of time.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by Fraternal Order of Police and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability - Safety Sensitive.

Incumbent must satisfactorily complete and pass all training: pre-employment physical, fitness test and examinations, DC Code and DC Municipal Regulations, obtaining a score of 70% or higher as a condition of continued employment.

Essential: Incumbent is designated as an essential employee and is subject to recall at any time; may be required to work shift work and weekends.
