Summary/Objective:

TheSpecialist is responsible for coordinating the exhibition design implementation within the Museum and providing support to the design department. The role primarily focuses on conducting research, presenting concepts, and exploring design solutions via renderings, mood boards, and physical models, as well as producing design drawings and shop drawings. The Specialist will collaborate closely with the design and production team (e.g., exhibition designer, graphic designer, fabrication/construction managers, AV managers, lighting designer, art installation team) to understand and address the needs and requirements of any given exhibition.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Work closely with the Director of Exhibition Design to implement exhibition design in the museum galleries.
  • Work with curatorial staff to determine curatorial intent.
  • Collaborate with the Graphic Design team.
  • Assist the Director of Exhibition Design in generation, presentation and coordination of exhibition concepts and layouts.
  • Work as a primary draftsman for the exhibition design department.
  • Work from rough sketches and specifications created by the Director and Manager of Exhibition Design and/or outside producers.
  • Convert conceptual ideas to design development drawings.
  • Create CAD or Vectorworks drawings and computer renderings to communicate concept and final design to other departments.
  • Produce renderings, diagrams, presentations, animations, or 3D models to communicate design ideas.
  • Prepare multiple versions of designs for review by curators, engineers, and base building architects.
  • Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for new layouts.
  • Possess general understanding of construction technologies.
  • Create construction drawings to communicate with Fabrication and Construction team.
  • Work closely with the Fabrication and Construction team to ensure that all design elements are executed according to plan.
  • Manage making of model and maquettes as well as prototypes and mock-ups.
  • Source materials and services. Obtain and maintain sample libraries.

 

Required Competencies:

  • A bachelor’s degree in architecture, interior design, museum studies, or a related field.
  • 1+ years’ experience in all phases of exhibition design and construction.
  • Technical drawing skills.
  • Proficiency in CAD or VectorWorks, Revit, Rhino, and Adobe Suite.
  • Familiarity with Audio/Video and Lighting systems.
  • Familiarity with building’s HVAC, electrical systems, access points, and load capacity.
  • Experience and ability to produce construction drawings.
  • Excellent rendering/animation skills in Cinema 4D or others.
  • Excellent model-making skills.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work in a flexible, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse implementation team is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating with multi-disciplinary and multi-skilled project teams in a gallery or museum environment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

 

  • Experience working with high-profile contract designers preferred.

Compensation: The expected salary range for this role is $27.88 to $28.85. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
