About the Position
The Specialist Trades Team Lead at the MDOT District 5 Shop in Newton provides leadership and technical guidance to skilled trades staff. This position is responsible for assigning daily work, coordinating schedules, monitoring workloads, and ensuring employees have the tools, equipment, and materials necessary to perform their duties safely and efficiently. The Team Lead provides hands-on technical support in specialized trade areas, assists with troubleshooting complex mechanical and equipment issues, and ensures work is completed according to MDOT specifications, safety standards, and applicable state regulations. Responsibilities include reviewing and managing work orders, monitoring work quality, conducting safety briefings, maintaining accurate documentation and inventory records, and communicating project updates with maintenance engineers, supervisors, and staff. This position requires a thorough understanding of all mechanical job functions, including the ability to diagnose equipment and computer-related systems, operate required electronic programs, and train and mentor new employees in specialty trades skills. The Team Lead is responsible for ensuring work orders are opened and closed promptly, parts are ordered and received in a timely manner, and workflow remains efficient to support daily operations.
