Job Description: Specimen Technician I (SPT I)

Position Details

  • Job Title: Specimen Technician I
  • Location: Albuquerque, NM
  • Duration: 7+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
  • Shift: 3rd Shift (Monday – Friday)
    Timings: 9:00 PM – 1:00 AM (MST)

Position Summary

The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides essential support within the Specimen Processing Department in a fast-paced, production-driven laboratory environment. This role involves handling and processing biological specimens with accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to strict quality and compliance standards.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong data entry skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities in a biohazard environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general specimen processing duties including:
    • A-station processing
    • Specimen presorting
    • Pickup and delivery of specimens to the laboratory
    • Imaging/microfilming
    • Centrifugation and aliquoting
  • Accurately enter specimen data with a required speed of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing to meet departmental productivity and quality standards
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of specimen types and associated laboratory tests
  • Comply with all regulatory requirements related to test ordering (subject to frequent updates)
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Follow all safety, compliance, and company policies (especially in a biohazard setting)
  • Communicate effectively with team members and other departments
  • Support customer satisfaction through high-quality work and responsiveness

Work Environment

  • Production-based laboratory environment with focus on turnaround times and quality
  • Exposure to biohazard materials (strict safety protocols required)
  • Requires standing or sitting for extended periods
  • May require flexibility for:
    • Weekends
    • Holidays
    • On-call assignments
    • Overtime

    • Production or high-volume work environments
  • Medical or healthcare-related background (preferred but not required)
