Job Description: Specimen Technician I
Job Title: Specimen Technician I (SPT I)
Location: Cleveland, OH
Duration: 3+ Months (Possibility of Extension)
Shift: 3rd Shift (EST) – 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM
Position Summary
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department in a fast-paced, production-driven laboratory environment. This role primarily involves data entry and handling of laboratory specimens, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely processing to support critical lab operations and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform various specimen processing functions including:
- A-station processing
- Specimen presorting
- Pickup and delivery of processed specimens to laboratory areas
- Imaging/microfilming
- Centrifugation and aliquoting
- Accurately enter data with a requirement of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Ensure all tasks are completed with a high level of accuracy, efficiency, and confidence
- Maintain knowledge of specimen types and associated tests as ordered by clients
- Comply with all regulatory requirements related to test ordering and specimen handling
- Adapt to frequent process, workflow, or regulatory changes
- Meet productivity and quality standards within defined departmental timelines
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Follow all safety, compliance, and company policies and procedures
- Communicate effectively with team members and staff across all levels
- Demonstrate flexibility to meet operational needs, including:
- Night shifts (primary)
- Weekends, holidays
- On-call and overtime as required
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work in a biohazard environment, adhering strictly to safety protocols
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Fast-paced, production-oriented environment with performance targets
- Exposure to varying customer demands and workflow fluctuations
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer proficiency and data entry skills
- Ability to achieve high data entry speed and accuracy
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt quickly to changes and work under pressure
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior laboratory or specimen processing experience
- Familiarity with medical terminology
- Background in healthcare or clinical laboratory settings
- Previous experience in a production or high-volume work environment
- Hospital laboratory experience (a plus, but not required)
