JOB DESCRIPTION - SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

Brief Description of Position

School Psychologist will provide services that enhance academic performance; design strategies and programs to address problems of adjustment; consult with other educators and parents on issues of social development, behavioral and academic difficulties; conduct psycho-educational assessments for purposes of identifying special needs; provide psychological counseling for individuals, groups and families; and coordinate intervention strategies for management of individual and school-wide crises.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assesses and evaluates child's needs, strengths and weaknesses by observation, interviews with parents and teachers, and through test instruments.
  • Prepares psycho-educational statements of special education eligibility as required by law.
  • Participates in Admissions and Discharge Committees as required by law.
  • Re-evaluates special education students as required by law.
  • Consults with other agencies, school districts, psychologist, psychiatrists, and physicians for the purpose of correlating all available information regarding individual cases.
  • Develops priority learning objectives for, and with selected children; identifies and promotes techniques which will help children attain these objectives.
  • Consults with the teacher in developing techniques for classroom evaluation, instruction and management.
  • Counsels with parents in determining priority problems of their children, and in affecting desired changes.
  • Consults with the principal about individual differences, environments that appear to facilitate the learning process, methods for developing an understanding of teacher-child, teacher-parent, and faculty relationships.
  • Encourages the establishment of special and remedial help when needed.
  • Maintains communication with county and state agencies regarding new and/or existing special education programs.
  • Provides information to special parent education groups as requested.
  • Maintains confidential records of referred children.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Pupil Personnel Director.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops or helps design research projects concerned with evaluating and improving the learning process.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, administrative council meetings, PTA meetings, community mental health services meetings, and other groups upon request.
  • Consultant to special education program as assigned.
  • Supervises group testing program as assigned.
  • Assists in planning evaluation of special District programs or projects.

Supervision - Exercised or Received

The psychologist is to be directly responsible to the Director of Pupil Personnel. Psychologists shall collaborate with the Principals regarding pupil Personnel Services in their schools.

Requirements / Qualifications

Applicants must have a Master s Degree and hold a valid California Pupil Personnel Credential covering the specialty of psychology. Please submit copies of your credential, transcripts and Master s Degree along with any other support documents. Include a cover letter, resume and three current letters of recommendation from people in a supervisory capacity (within the last 1 year).
