POSITION FUNCTION SUMMARY Develops and provides academically and developmentally appropriate specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students. Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives and functions as IEP manager to assigned students.

Teacher Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accurately demonstrates knowledge of the content area and uses the approved curriculum with fidelity.
  • Gives clear expectations relating to lesson content and procedure.
  • Communicates accurately in the content area.
  • Shows inter relatedness across content areas.
  • Uses teaching techniques which address student learning levels, rates, and styles.
  • Uses materials and media which address student learning levels, rates, and styles.
  • Provides research based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each students Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Responsible for providing appropriate and specially designed instruction or resources in a one to one setting, small group, or inclusion within the classroom as stated on the IEP.
  • Functions as IEP Manager, coordinating the instruction and related services to assigned students.
  • Develops and implements annual IEP for student to include:
  • Present levels of performance.
  • Special education needs.
  • Instructional goals and objectives.
  • Conducts a functional behavior assessment and develops behavior intervention plans.
  • Adheres to procedural requirements, including due process timelines.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each students IEP.
  • Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers regarding the needs of the student.
  • Provides consultation to classroom teacher regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of the student.
  • Consults and collaborates with the classroom teacher to monitor and determine academic grades.
  • Schedules and facilitates IEP meetings.
  • Establishes a safe and supportive environment that is conducive to learning and enables each student to demonstrate agency, ownership, and reflection.
  • Comprehends the principles of student growth, development, and the teaching learning cycle, and actively applies them appropriately.
  • Designs and implements authentic and engaging learning experiences using the New Mexico Adopted Content Standards in addition to the Carlsbad Municipal Schools adopted curriculum.
  • Comprehends and actively implements New Mexicos Multi Layered System of Supports (MLSS) to support holistic student success.
  • Adheres to Carlsbad Municipal Schools assessment and grading policy and guidelines.
  • Assesses student growth as related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Actively uses and analyzes a variety of assessment tools and data to drive instruction, implement strategies and offer remediation.
  • Actively maintains records of student progress and communicates student progress with students and families in a timely manner.
  • Recognizes student diversity and culture and creates an atmosphere conducive to positive student involvement and self-concept.
  • Works in a collaborative and supportive manner with colleagues, students, parents, and the community to promote and support student learning.
  • Works with administration to meet professional requirements and responsibilities.
  • Is punctual in attendance and in responding to due dates.
  • Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with the dress code policy established by Carlsbad Municipal Schools.
  • Serves duties and supervises students as assigned.
  • Leaves adequate preparations for a substitute.
  • Serves on committees.
  • Keeps teaching credentials current.
  • Communicates in a professional manner with colleagues, parents, and community members regarding educational matters.
  • When assigned, directs the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers to provide an effective learning environment.
  • Supports and actively participates in the schools professional learning community to deepen the understanding of curriculum, content, competencies, assessment, and the developmental needs of students.
  • Creates a positive atmosphere and arranges the physical environment of the classroom for optimum learning.
  • Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, district, and departmental meetings.
  • Seeks out information on methodology, research, technology, and current trends in education to enhance student learning.
  • Performs care-giving duties including, but not limited to toileting duties, feeding, pushing wheelchairs, and lifting/transferring students with special needs.

Education and Experience

  • Required Bachelors Degree from an accredited college.
  • A valid New Mexico teaching license with a special education endorsement as needed.
  • Must be able to pass employment verification.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
