REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

STARTING: 2026-2027 School Year

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of Associates Degree in communication disorders from an accredited SLA program such as the Nashua Community College, a minimum of one practicum experience working under the supervision of an SLP; two or more practicum experiences desirable.

SUMMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Speech-Language Assistant (SLA) assists speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the provision of speech-language services to IEP-identified students and may assist the SLP as directed in the screening, evaluating, diagnosing, and treating disorders of communication. Services provided address disorders of speech, articulation, fluency, voice, verbal and written language, auditory comprehension, cognition communication and swallowing disorders. Speech-language assistants do not provide services independently, and must work under the direction and supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist.

Speech-language assistants collaborate with SLPs, classroom and Special Education teachers, and peers to enhance the instructional environment, are responsible for meeting school and district wide student performance goals, enhance student performance, and meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating and professional development.
