    Job Description

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education – Completion of an accredited program for Speech Language Pathologists recognized by the Commission on Accreditation of Speech Language Pathology Education or approved successor organization.

    Experience – A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience is preferred.

    Licenses & Certification – Incumbent must possess and maintain current State of Oklahoma Licensure for Speech Language Pathologists or be a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) candidate with a provisional license who performs duties under the direct on-site supervision of licensed and certified personnel according to Oklahoma licensure and ASHA guidelines.

    Knowledge & Skills –

    1. Knowledge and experience of the principles and procedures of Speech Language Pathology and its relationship to health, treatment and prevention of disability, quality of life issues and the value of interdisciplinary interaction through supervision and monitoring of a Speech Language Pathology program

    2. Ability and skill in assessment, planning and carrying out treatment modalities, patient education and discharge planning for a variety of inpatient and outpatient situations.

    3. Knowledge of major aspects of patient management such as evaluation, treatment plan and administration.

    4. Knowledge of personnel and rehab services management practices, methods and principles.

    5. Ability to develop and monitor quality assurance plans in accordance with pertinent rules, standards, regulations, policies and procedures as applicable.

    6. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.

    7. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, medical staff, administrative staff, health care professionals and the general public both orally and in writing.

    8. Ability to remain calm and respond quickly in high stress situations as needed.

    JOB  SUMMARY

    The purpose of the position is to plan, develop, and coordinate speech services activities for inpatient and ambulatory care patients within the designated service area of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Health System.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Work is performed in an inpatient and ambulatory health care setting.  There is common exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, potentially hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials.  The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and/or emotionally disturbed patients, families, and visitors. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested and required.  

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Work in the ambulatory health care setting requires considerable walking between exam and treatment rooms, and long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring bending, stooping, stretching, kneeling, and lifting of patients or similar activities. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:

    1. Interprets physician orders. Provide direct patient care through evaluation and treatment programs including instruction to patients and their families in specific speech language pathology programs.

    2. Plans and carries out speech services for inpatients and outpatients. Assists in the diagnoses communication disorders of speech and language; recommends and administers treatment plans and makes recommendations for individual cases.  Prepares progress notes on individual cases.  Identifies and treats communication disorders.

    3. Teach exercises and movements to be performed by patients to prevent occurrence of deformities or to lessen the impact of deformities.

    4. Perform special tests to carry out complex procedures, determines kind and degree of muscle reactions to test and interprets results of tests.

    5. Assess the level of patient care on a continuing basis and updates procedures as necessary.

    6. Provide consultation and evaluation of speech services to physician, nursing and other professional at the service unit using tact, good judgment and persuasiveness.

    7. Attend medical staff rounds on a regular basis to keep updated on inpatient problems and recommend appropriate speech language pathology intervention.

    8. Keeps clear and accurate records on patients seen in accordance with established policy.

    9. Maintains and cleans equipment used by department and demonstrates responsible and proper use of supplies.

    10. Regular attendance is required.

    11. Performs other duties as required.
