Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 7 hours per day between 8:00 a.m. - 4:00p.m. / This is a 10 month position and follows the student calendar from August through June

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education and general direction and guidance of a credentialed Language Speech Specialist, assists the Language Speech Specialist with the assessment and remediation of preschool through 8th grade students referred to the Speech Language program.

Employment Standards

Education and Experience

  • One year of paid or volunteer experience working with students experiencing language deficiencies or remedial instructional needs
  • Associate degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a Speech Language Pathology Assistant Certificate

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of language and articulation disorders; remediation materials; child development and behavior characteristics and the cultural attitudes of children with bilingual/bicultural instructional needs; bilingual/bicultural instructional strategies; behavior management strategies and techniques; augmentation communication devices; correct and appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar; basic assessment tools and procedures; computer software applications; methods and procedures for accurate records maintenance and storage; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

Ability to demonstrate an empathetic, patient and receptive attitude with students and parents; understand, interpret, and follow specific student educational plans and courses of study; communicate effectively in oral and written form in English and second language as required by the assignment, and to serve as an appropriate language model; utilize current speech-language methods and procedures in an instructional setting; learn to utilize a variety of appropriate technological equipment, educational software and instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of an educational environment; utilize specialized communication systems and devices; understand and carry out oral and written directions; perform a variety of routine clerical tasks in support of assigned department; operate a variety of educational and office machines and equipment, including computer and related software; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with staff, students and parents

Licenses and Other Requirements

California Driver's License and automobile insurance coverage or must have other reliable transportation to travel during the course of employment
