Summary

The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) assumes responsibility and accountability for an assigned caseload of patients. The SLP will evaluate, develop, and implement Speech Language Pathology treatment plans, provide education and information to patients and caregivers, participate in required discharge planning tasks, and complete all required documentation according to policy.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

•      Consult with other members of the Rehabilitation Team to select the most appropriate therapeutic program for individual patients, based on patient needs and capabilities

•       Select activities that are appropriate and individualized for each patient

•      Teach patients/caregivers the skills and techniques consistent with the speech therapy plan of care

•      Prepare notes/reports summarizing patient's reactions to therapy

•      Conduct internal training programs for medical and nursing staff on speech language pathology techniques and objectives

•      Serve as a clinical instructor for student affiliations

•      Participate in performance improvement and program development initiatives as requested

•      Integrate principles of age-specific care into all aspects of practice

•      Initiate collaborative interactions with physicians and other hospital staff to improve patient care outcomes

•       Support inpatient and outpatient areas when needed

•      Meet productivity expectations and positively assist department in achieving financial goals

•       Adhere to established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards

•      Complete assigned tasks within timeframes allocated

•       Utilize work time wisely and efficiently, providing appropriate levels of care to patients

•       Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services

•       Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: Master's Degree in Speech Pathology Preferred Education: Not applicable

Experience: Previous experience is preferred, but will accept new graduates who are Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) eligible

Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

Preferred applicant should have a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) or be Clinical Fellowship Year eligible.

Current licensure, or licensure eligibility, in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

BLS is required.
