About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior SQL Database Administrator to join our client [IT Infrastructure / Database Engineering] team. In this role, you will be the technical authority responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of our critical database ecosystems. You will focus primarily on Microsoft SQL Server while also supporting open-source and legacy database technologies.

The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver who can architect high-availability solutions, optimize performance at scale, and mentor junior team members.

Key Responsibilities

Database Administration & Architecture (SQL Server)

• Design & Implement HA/DR: Architect, configure, and maintain high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, specifically SQL Server Clustering (WSFC) and Always On Availability Groups.

• Performance Tuning: Proactively monitor and optimize database performance using tools like SQL Profiler, Extended Events, and DMVs. Resolve blocking, deadlocking, and I/O contention issues.

• T-SQL Scripting: Develop and maintain complex T-SQL scripts for automation, data manipulation, and administrative tasks.

• Standards & Governance: Establish and enforce database standards, policies, and procedures for security, backup/recovery, and change management.

• Upgrades & Patching: Manage SQL Server version upgrades, Cumulative Updates (CUs), and Service Packs (SPs) with minimal downtime.

Cross-Platform & Legacy Support

• Open-Source & Other RDBMS: Provide administrative support and migration assistance for MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL.

• Legacy Systems: Maintain and support legacy databases including Microsoft Access and Oracle PL/SQL environments.

• Integration: Ensure seamless data flow and connectivity between disparate database platforms.

Operational Excellence

• Backup & Recovery: Own the backup and recovery strategy, ensuring RPO/RTO targets are met. Perform regular recovery drills.

• Security: Implement database security best practices, including encryption (TDE), auditing, and role-based access control (RBAC).

• Troubleshooting: Act as the escalation point for complex database issues, providing root cause analysis (RCA) and permanent fixes.

• Cloud Exposure: Assist in the migration or hybrid management of databases to Azure (IaaS/PaaS).

Required Qualifications (Must-Have)

• Experience: 8+ years of proven experience as a SQL Server DBA in an enterprise environment.

• SQL Server Mastery:

  • Deep expertise in SQL Server Clustering and Always On Availability Groups.

  • Advanced T-SQL scripting skills (stored procedures, triggers, functions, window functions).

  • Proven track record of HA/DR design and implementation.

  • Strong performance tuning capabilities (Query Store, Execution Plans, Indexing strategies).

• Secondary Database Exposure: Hands-on experience with MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL.

• Legacy Systems: Experience supporting Microsoft Access and writing/debugging PL/SQL (Oracle).

• Certifications:Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) is required.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)

• Legacy Certifications:MCSA (Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate) or MCSE (Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert) in SQL Server / Data Management.

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (Terraform, ARM templates).

• Familiarity with PowerShell for database automation.

• Experience with third-party monitoring tools (Redgate, SolarWinds, Idera).
