| Role: SQL Server Data Engineer Job Description: The client is seeking a highly skilled technical consultant to support a homegrown VBA-based application called Star Tracker, built with MS Access Forms (front end) and SQL Server databases (back end). This 6 month engagement focuses on documenting the existing solution, refreshing and optimizing SQL Server databases, and providing maintenance support. The consultant will also produce comprehensive documentation to enable a clean handoff to Optum Tech, who will lead the upcoming migration of the solution to Snowflake. Key Responsibilities 1. Application & Architecture Documentation • Conduct a thorough assessment of the existing MS Access/VBA front-end and SQL Server back-end architecture. • Document application workflow, business logic, data flows, dependencies, and integration points. • Create detailed technical documentation including: o Entity relationship diagrams o Process flows and data lineage o VBA module/function catalog o Configuration and environment details 2. SQL Server Database Refresh & Optimization • Review and assess the current SQL Server database structure, stored procedures, tables, indexes, and jobs. • Perform cleanup, optimization, and refresh activities including: o Index tuning o Query optimization o Archival strategies o Database health checks and remediation • Ensure alignment of SQL Server structures with documented business and technical requirements. 3. Application Maintenance & Support • Provide ongoing support for the existing Star Tracker application during the engagement period. • Troubleshoot issues with both the MS Access/VBA front end and SQL Server back end. • Implement minor fixes or enhancements as needed to maintain stability. 4. Migration Readiness & Handoff • Partner closely with Optum Tech to prepare the solution for migration to Snowflake. • Ensure documentation is complete, structured, and migration friendly. • Participate in knowledge transfer sessions with technical and product teams. • Identify risks, gaps, or dependencies that may impact migration readiness. Required skills: Required Qualifications • 5+ years of experience with MS Access, VBA, and SQL Server development and support. • Strong SQL Server expertise including stored procedures, performance tuning, indexing, and data modeling. • Experience documenting legacy systems and reverse engineering both database and application logic. • Ability to quickly interpret and simplify complex VBA and Access form structures. • Strong understanding of data architecture principles and migration considerations. • Excellent communication skills for cross team collaboration and knowledge transfer. Preferred skills: Preferred Qualifications • Experience modernizing or supporting VBA/MS Access based applications. • Exposure to cloud data technologies—especially Snowflake—is a plus. • Familiarity with Optum's technology ecosystem or healthcare data environments. • Experience producing migration ready documentation. |
