Description

Project Leo (former Kuiper) is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low‑latency, high‑speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. As a Systems Engineer, this role is primarily responsible for the design, development and integration of Ka band and FR1 band communication payload and customer terminal systems.

The Role:

Be part of the team defining the overall communication system and architecture of Amazon Leo's broadband wireless network. This is a unique opportunity to innovate and define groundbreaking wireless technology at global scale. The team develops and designs the communication system for Project Leo and analyzes its overall system‑level performance such as throughput, latency, system availability, packet loss, etc.

This role in particular will be responsible for leading the effort in designing and developing advanced technology and solutions for communication system. It will also be responsible for developing advanced physical‑layer + protocol‑stack systems as proof‑of‑concept and reference implementation to improve the performance and reliability of the LEO network. In particular, it will apply concepts from digital signal processing, information theory and wireless communications to develop novel solutions for achieving ultra‑high performance in the LEO network. The role will also develop simulation tools with a particular emphasis on modeling the physical‑layer aspects such as advanced receiver modeling and abstraction, interference‑cancellation techniques, FEC abstraction models, etc. Additionally, it will play a critical role in the integration and verification of various hardware and software subsystems as part of system integration, link bring‑up and verification.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export‑control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Basic Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or experience working in the electrical‑engineering field

  • 5+ years professional experience working in wireless communications at the system or implementation level

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD with emphasis in broadband wireless or wireline communication systems

  • Deep understanding of multiple‑access systems such as OFDMA, TDMA, CDMA, etc.

  • Experience in test‑automation setup and scripting languages such as Python/Perl/Matlab

  • Experience with software‑defined radios and embedded programming in C/C++ and VHDL/Verilog is a plus

  • Deep understanding of 3GPP L1 physical layer and higher‑layer protocols such as RLC, RRC, MAC

  • Must have the ability to work in a small team and drive results beyond expectations

  • Broad spectrum of knowledge to understand end‑to‑end network system architecture from wireless physical layer all the way up to application endpoints

  • Implementation experience with wireless synchronization and parameter‑sensing techniques such as ranging/positioning based on signaling, as well as low‑power design expertise

  • Ideal candidate has a wireless communication systems or digital signal‑processing background, a passion for building real‑world carrier‑grade communication systems, and industry experience developing PHY/MAC layer software targeting embedded multicore processors in C/C++. Experience with lab test equipment such as channel emulator, spectrum analyzers and signal and network traffic generators

  • Experience leading technical initiatives and delivering key deliverables

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
