Location Details:

Position Schedule / Shift: Monday- Friday 8am-5pm

Position Summary:

Review, accept, decline or modify offerings submitted by producers for multiple/various commercial line coverage.  Evaluate risks according to location, physical and moral hazards, inspection reports, underwriting precedent and experience, ensuring compliance with underwriting rules, guidelines and company philosophy throughout the process.  Review information received regarding risks including inspection reports and credit reports and verify application data through the use of investigative letters, commercial inspections and/or personal observation.  Review inspection reports and claims for rating on acceptability status and recommend risk improvement as appropriate.  Initiate potential policy coverage or rating revision as a result of analysis and recommends and approves continuation, cancellation, non-renewal or rejection of applications or policies in accordance with established underwriting procedures, laws and judgment.

Exercise discretionary judgment when evaluating new or renewal high-value commercial underwriting application policies and evaluate the merits of each line of insurance based on current laws or level of underwriting expertise to accept or reject the risk presented.  Correspond with outside insurance companies, business organizations, governmental agencies, or other contacts to develop procedures or to properly evaluate risks.  Communicate and develop relationships with agents and producers and other insurance personnel to obtain further information, rate quotes or explain company underwriting policies. Manage portfolio to control the overall mix of accounts, profitability and take prompt action when necessary.

Train and educate agency staff on company products, services, processes and underwriting philosophy. Train, coach and serve as a technical resource to other underwriters. Provide mentorship that encourage individuals and the team to improve and accelerate performance. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Education (include minimum education and any licensing/certifications):

High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • three years commercial insurance experience

  • underwriting policies, procedures and practices

  • working in a commercial underwriting environment

  • inspection techniques related to commercial insurance

  • working with mathematical concepts including fractions, ratios, statistics and probabilities

Knowledge and Skills:

  • commercial insurance contracts and forms

  • insurance laws as they relate to commercial underwriting

  • company commercial insurance programs and products, underwriting rules and requirements

  • processing procedures and rules

  • ISO or similar bureau rating systems (Regional Operations)

  • organization and planning

  • negotiating, analyzing and problem solving

  • independent decision making

  • written communication skills to include reports and technical writing. 

  • analyze and interpret commercial inspection

  • provide work direction, guidance and training

  • coordinate and control major projects

  • communicate effectively with others

Preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree Business Administration or related field

  • Completion of an underwriting certification/designation (CPCU, CIC)

Work Environment:

This position is currently able to work remotely from a home office location for day-to-day operations unless occasional travel for meetings, collaborative activities, or team building activities is specified by leadership. This is subject to change based on amendments and/or modifications to the ACG Flex Work policy.

Compensation & Benefits Overview:

Compensation

Our Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter will earn a competitive annual salary of $85,000 - $110,000 with annual bonus potential, based on performance.

Time Off & Leave

  • Paid Time Off (PTO): Accrual-based, increases with tenure, eligible at 90 days of employment. Full-time new employees will receive up to 12 PTO days annually; accrual based on start date and may include additional PTO based on role and/or state & local requirements. Part-time employee PTO hours are calculated based upon the standard weekly hours the employee is scheduled to work and will accrue at a minimum of 3 hours per month.

  • Paid Holidays: Full-time employees are eligible for 10 company-paid holidays annually, in addition to 1 mental health day, 2 floating holidays and 1 volunteer day. Holidays vary by business unit schedules. Part-time employees are eligible for 8 company-paid holidays annually, in addition to 1 mental health day and 2 floating holidays. Holidays vary by business unit schedules.
