Role Definition A Senior Designer must have a strong design background and a desire to use creativity to solve problems in three-dimensional space, which enhances the productivity, quality, and working environment of facilities. A Sr. Designer will have the ability to accurately and efficiently design and layout the process for a variety of ag and industrial facilities, including but not limited to commercial seed production, grain handling and storage, milling, feed mill, pet food, oilseed extraction, and/or ethanol facilities. They are very technical and understand industrial process flows, equipment lists, and design methodology required to develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFD's), and General Arrangement drawings. They will have 10+ years of relevant design experience and have the ability and willingness to teach and mentor others. They will assist the Project Manager in planning overall project safety, budget, schedule, and quality of complex projects. This role profile is subject to change at any time. PROPOSALS & PRE-DESIGN Collaborate with internal/external partners, engineers, and professionals to define project technical parameters, develop conceptual design, and scope.
Provide input on critical path schedules for design/procurement phases, factoring in resources and hand-offs for procurement, fabrication, and construction.
LEAD GENERAL ARRANGEMENT DESIGN Lead owner design meetings; foster communication, collaboration, conflict resolution, and progress; document changes; use online tools for efficiency.
Lead Process / General Arrangement design on projects, make recommendations/decisions, and oversee quality of drawings, Process Flow Diagrams (PFD's), equipment lists, specs, reports, and docs.
Research and ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal codes, permits, and standards using internal/external expertise.
Prepare and execute design services to meet client expectations for clarity, timeliness, quality, completeness, and efficiency.
Critique designs for safety, manufacturability, constructability, failures, usage, functionality, and efficiency.
Ensure safety in project design for all stakeholders per OSHA, MSHA, IBC, IFC, NFPA, and other regulations.
Analyze equipment, systems, and processes to meet, sustain, and improve performance requirements as needed.
Implement designs, prototype, test, modify for cost-effectiveness/budget adherence, and commission processes.
Analyze problems via data, field engineering, experimentation, and team dialog to enhance designs, reduce warranties, and drive improvements.
PROCUREMENT & CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION Collaborate with project management to procure engineering services; prepare/negotiate contracts and revisions with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers, and trade contractors per payment terms.
Conduct site observations and report deficiencies, non-conformances, safety/quality issues, and improvements to senior project manager.
Comply with project risk programs (contracts, insurance, bonding, owner/regs); identify, investigate, and propose risk solutions.
CLIENT RELATIONS & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Participate in business development and customer service via professional representation and interactions with customers, partners, suppliers, and industry contacts.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS 2 or 4-year degree from college or technical school in structural, architectural, electrical, or mechanical drafting or design. Combined experience and industry educational certifications to demonstrate competency will be considered.
Preferred experience with Autodesk Design Suite (Revit, AutoCAD, Inventor, Navisworks, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs, and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.
Must be able to position one-self to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.
Occasionally requires walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and crouching.
