Company Summary Our client is the global leader in commercial laundry equipment manufacturing, with over a century of operating history and a portfolio of premium brands sold in more than 140 countries. Headquartered in central Wisconsin, they design and manufacture washers, dryers, and integrated laundry systems for laundromats, hotels, hospitals, multi-housing, and on-premises laundry operations. The company is privately held with strong financial backing, employs thousands worldwide, and is known for vertical integration, in-house engineering, and a tenure-rich, engineering-driven culture.

Position Summary The Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer leads the design, development, and validation of C-based firmware that powers the electronic controls inside premium laundry products. This is a senior individual contributor and project lead role (no direct reports) that partners closely with electrical engineering on hardware bring-up, communication protocols, motor controls, and HMI development. The role also mentors junior firmware engineers and helps shape coding standards, tooling, and best practices across the team.

What You'll Do

  • Lead full-lifecycle firmware development in C for microcontroller-based platforms including machine controllers, HMIs, and I/O boards
  • Write firmware design specs, test plans, and execute unit, integration, and system-level validation
  • Develop and maintain low-level device drivers, bootloaders, communication stacks, and real-time control logic
  • Implement and debug embedded protocols including CAN, Modbus, UART, SPI, and I2C
  • Partner with electrical engineers on hardware/firmware integration, board bring-up, and peripheral configuration
  • Debug at the hardware level using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD probes, and protocol analyzers
  • Ensure firmware meets regulatory requirements (UL, CE, FCC) and follows functional safety and cybersecurity best practices
  • Establish and enforce coding standards (MISRA-C), static analysis, code review processes, and version control discipline using Git
  • Support motor drive firmware and embedded control strategies
  • Mentor junior firmware engineers and lead by example on best practices
  • Specify microcontrollers and supporting components for new product designs
  • Provide expert-level firmware support to production and field issues

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical degree
  • 8+ years of production embedded firmware development in C
  • Hands-on experience with ARM Cortex-M, STM32, PIC, Renesas, or similar MCUs
  • Strong embedded comms protocol experience: CAN, Modbus, UART, SPI, I2C
  • Bare-metal and/or RTOS (FreeRTOS preferred) experience
  • Hardware-level debugging with JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
  • Experience with MISRA-C, static analysis tools, and unit testing for embedded systems
  • Strong Git workflow experience
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills
  • Comfortable in a hands-on lab environment with live electrical equipment

Strongly Preferred:

  • Motor drive firmware or real-time control experience
  • Consumer or commercial appliance industry background
  • Functional safety experience (IEC 60730, IEC 61508 or similar)
  • Embedded cybersecurity exposure
  • Mentorship experience without formal management

Logistics

  • 100% onsite at the Ripon, WI headquarters
  • Relocation assistance available for the right candidate
  • Candidates relocating need to be fully bought in (family, schools, etc.)
  • Standard sit/stand work with light lifting of test equipment and product hardware
