Job Summary

Murphy Oil Corporation seeks a Senior Geoscientist to join the Onshore Subsurface Team within the Global Subsurface organization. This role supports regional-to-local subsurface evaluation and asset development across Murphy's onshore portfolio, with emphasis on play fairway characterization, prospect maturation, acreage assessment, and opportunity screening. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will apply strong technical judgment in petroleum systems, stratigraphy, basin analysis, regional mapping, and resource evaluation to support development planning, operational performance, and economic recovery. The role also includes scoping technical studies, developing practical solutions to complex subsurface challenges, and preparing clear recommendations for management. Experience supporting business development and M&A evaluations is preferred.

Murphy's Mission, Vision, and Values emphasize clear communication, dependable execution, effective prioritization, innovation, and collaboration across teams to achieve shared business objectives.

This position is based at our Houston Corporate office, with the option to work remotely up to two days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regional mapping and subsurface evaluations to identify emerging trends, characterize acreage and play fairway potential, monitor competitor activity, and support business development, exploration, and acquisition opportunities where applicable.
  • Apply an understanding of Texas land, lease, spacing, pooling, and regulatory frameworks to support acreage assessments, development planning, and business development evaluations.
  • Integrate well, core, production, mapping, and other subsurface datasets to generate field- and area-level interpretations, resource assessments, and risk evaluations that support development planning and opportunity screening.
  • Develop and maintain integrated asset development plans, including inventory assessment, well spacing, landing targets, step-outs, and economic justification.
  • Collaborate with reservoir, drilling, completions, and other disciplines to support reservoir characterization, well planning, field development, and asset optimization.
  • Evaluate drilling, completions, and production performance to identify drivers of results and recommend optimization opportunities to improve reserves and recovery.
  • Plan, execute, and interpret surveillance and other data acquisition programs, including the application of new technologies to maximize value.
  • Support reserves processes, peer reviews, technical studies, and management decision-making through clear recommendations and presentations.
  • Identify process improvements, mentor less-experienced team members, and contribute to effective execution across the broader subsurface organization.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Master's degree in Geology or a related geoscience discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience
  • Significant experience in onshore subsurface development, regional mapping, play assessment, acreage evaluation, and opportunity screening.
  • Experience in volumetric analysis, reserves and resource assessment, integrated asset characterization, and support for business development evaluations.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate diverse subsurface datasets for development planning, mapping, and resource evaluation.
  • Strong understanding of onshore development workflows, multidisciplinary collaboration, and operational decision support.
  • Proficiency with standard geoscience interpretation software.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
