Sr. Grant Accountant

About the Role:

Provide advanced accounting and financial reporting support for grants, contracts, and restricted funds, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and effective stewardship of sponsored resources.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review internal and external financial reports and invoices by analyzing data from multiple financial systems

  • Perform grant and general ledger account reconciliations to ensure accurate and compliant financial reporting

  • Prepare and review routine and non‑routine journal entries, budget entries, and adjustments for grants and related accounts

  • Serve as a primary accounting resource for principal investigators and departmental administrators, providing guidance on routine grant‑related questions and resolving issues

  • Review grant expenditures (including purchasing, travel, and procurement card transactions) for compliance with grant terms, University policies, and proper account coding

  • Research, resolve, and correct transaction and posting errors across multiple systems

  • Support grant and contract closeout activities, ensuring timely and accurate financial resolution

  • Prepare documentation and respond to internal and external audit requests related to grants and sponsored programs

  • Assist with grant training workshops and contribute to user education efforts

  • Prepare special financial analyses and reports as requested by leadership

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements related to grant accounting, reporting, and internal controls

  • Perform other related duties consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of progressively responsible accounting experience

  • Demonstrated experience with grant or restricted fund accounting, including financial reporting, reconciliation, and compliance review

  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles

  • Experience preparing and reviewing journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports

  • Ability to analyze financial data from multiple sources, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues independently

  • Experience working with enterprise financial systems and reporting tools

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non‑financial stakeholders

  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education, research administration, government, or sponsored programs accounting

  • Knowledge of federal and non‑federal grant regulations (e.g., Uniform Guidance)

  • Experience supporting internal and external audits

  • Experience working directly with principal investigators or departmental administrators

  • Demonstrated ability to recommend or implement process improvements related to financial controls or reporting
