    Description

As a Sr .Hardware Development Engineer in Amazon's Last Mile Automation and Robotics group, you will lead Design for Excellence (DfX) and Contract Manufacturing (CM) strategies for global robotics technologies. This role focuses on driving cross-functional collaboration, setting best practices, and ensuring seamless scalability and reliability of hardware across Amazon Last Mile"s worldwide robotics products. You will influence product design from concept to mass production, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability, and customer impact.

    Key job responsibilities

Lead DfX Strategy & Best Practices:

    • Define and implement DfX frameworks to guide hardware design for manufacturability, testability, reliability, and serviceability across global CM partners.
    • Drive cross-team alignment on DfX standards, tools, and processes to reduce time-to-market and production costs.

    Oversee Contract Manufacturing Partnerships:

    • Serve as the primary technical liaison between engineering and CM partners, ensuring robust design transfer, quality control, and continuous improvement.
    • Develop and maintain CM capability matrices, risk mitigation plans, and supplier performance dashboards.

    Architect Scalable Hardware Solutions:

    • Design and validate hardware platforms that support high-volume, global-scale production while meeting performance, safety, and compliance requirements.
    • Optimize bill-of-materials (BOM) and manufacturing processes for cost, quality, and sustainability.

    Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership:

    • Partner with AR (Advanced Robotics), Systems Engineering, and Manufacturing teams to align hardware design with system-level requirements and operational constraints.
    • Mentor and guide other engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.

    Root-Cause Analysis & Problem Solving:

    • Lead investigations into production defects, yield issues, and field failures; implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
    • Apply data-driven methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, FMEA) to improve product reliability and manufacturability.

    Process Improvement & Standardization:

    • Identify and drive adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies (e.g., automation, AI driven testing) to enhance efficiency and quality.
    • Standardize test, inspection, and packaging processes across CM sites to ensure consistency.

    Risk & Compliance Management:

    • Ensure all hardware designs comply with international safety, regulatory, and environmental standards (e.g., CE, FCC, RoHS).
    • Develop risk management frameworks to address design, manufacturing, and field-service risks.

    Technical Roadmap & Innovation:

    • Contribute to long-term hardware strategy, evaluating emerging technologies and trends to future-proof Amazon's robotics portfolio.
    • Pilot and champion innovative DfX approaches (e.g., digital twins, generative design) to accelerate development cycles.

    A day in the life

In this role, you will shape the future of Amazon's robotics and automation ecosystem. Your leadership will directly impact product quality, operational efficiency, and customer experience across millions of fulfillment centers worldwide. This is an opportunity to drive transformative innovation while building high-performing teams and enduring partnerships.

    About the team

The team is part of the WW Engineering and Innovation organization that is setup to drive innovation across various business units from Middle Mile to Last Mile and is in particular responsible for bringing in new technologies for Last Mile automation.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
