Purpose

This position provides skilled work of more than average difficulty in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical

equipment used in the drinking water treatment plants.

The purpose of this position is to ensure the reliable operation, safety, and efficiency of mechanical systems critical to the production and treatment of drinking water. This role performs highly skilled maintenance, installation, and repair of pumps, motors, lift stations, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, chlorine systems, generators, and related equipment that sustain continuous plant operations.

Through proactive inspection, technical expertise, and responsive troubleshooting, this position safeguards public health, supports regulatory compliance, minimizes downtime, and contributes to the long-term integrity of the City's water infrastructure. This role also supports team development and operational excellence by mentoring crew members, maintaining accurate documentation, and identifying opportunities to improve plant performance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Regularly inspects all mechanical equipment, evaluates performance, and makes recommendations to the assigned supervisor as to maintenance and repair requirements.
  • Installs, services, maintains, and repairs pumps, motors, chlorinators, and other machinery and equipment.
  • Respond to and repair sewer backups.
  • Maintains, diagnoses, and corrects problems at various lift stations. Use a crane truck to pull pumps and correct the problem when necessary.
  • Operates and cares for power tools in maintaining, fabricating, and repairing parts of equipment; operates large mobile equipment such as a boom truck, a forklift, a hoist, or a crane, when assigned.
  • Modifies existing equipment as needed to improve plant operations; installs new pumps and equipment.
  • Orders parts and supplies.
  • Operates heavy equipment.
  • Repairs hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Maintains diesel generators.
  • Changes chlorine containers weekly; performs specialized maintenance and repairs on liquid chlorine systems, including chlorinators, evaporators, and vacuum regulators.
  • Cleans chemical solution tanks and piping.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on the Trac-Vac system; changes boots, fittings, hoses, and control valves.
  • Performs specialized welding, burning, cutting, and fabrication.
  • Changes out gas bottles and supplies meter stations with spares.
  • Performs general and specialized maintenance and repairs on the sludge de-watering facility, including centrifuge, polymer pump, and piping.
  • May direct the work of all crew members, including training, guidance, and counseling, to ensure their safety and welfare in the performance of their duties.
  • Completes and submits reports of work activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires High School Diploma or GED equivalent with four (4) years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair of water/wastewater treatment plants, heavy-duty pumping and auxiliary power equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid state Class C Driver's License with an acceptable driving history

Additional Requirements

Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen, and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.
