    Description

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished Senior Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design and implementation of automated material handling systems for new and existing factories and programs. This role is part of Teslas Cell Manufacturing organization and is based at Gigafactory Texas (GFTX) in Austin. The position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as part of a highly skilled and agile team tackling some of the most ambitious projects in the manufacturing industry.

The Material Flow Engineering (MFE) team is responsible for developing innovative solutions that ensure the efficient and reliable flow of materials to Battery Cell Manufacturing lines. As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you will drive the development of automated material handling systems from concept through implementation, including installation, commissioning, start of operation, and turnover to production teams. You will play a key role in ensuring system designs align with Teslas specifications and operational goals while providing technical leadership and collaborating closely with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.

Design and implement automated material handling solutions to optimize material flow across Teslas manufacturing lines, covering raw material transport, move product in between shops, and final product delivery within Cell Manufacturing.

Lead the development of innovative material flow strategies and dynamic manufacturing systems that improve efficiency, scalability, and reliability.

Develop analytical models and simulations to establish design criteria and system performance benchmarks.

Investigate and apply advanced technologies in our material handling equipment, including:

    • Automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) • Buffer systems • Conveyance systems • Mobile robotics (AGVs) • Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) • Robotic material handling and lift systems

Own end-to-end project execution, including concept development, detailed engineering design, equipment procurement, integration, installation, and commissioning.

Drive continuous improvement in existing material handling solutions by analyzing performance data and implementing system enhancements.

Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing engineering, factory layout construction, process engineering, and production teams to align material flow solutions with Teslas broader operational goals.

Manage project timelines, budgets, and vendor relationships, ensuring seamless execution and on-time delivery.

Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and stakeholders within Tesla, ensuring a culture of innovation and operational excellence.

Defining and implementing actionable plans that drive progress toward the programs long-term vision and objectives.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelors Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent experience
    • 5 years of practical automated material handling and process equipment design experience in industries such as automotive, consumer goods, food and beverage manufacturing, distribution, and semiconductor
    • Expertise in material handling technologies, including ASRS, conveyors, AGVs, AMRs, and robotic handling systems
    • Proficiency in CAD software, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar tools for system modeling and layout design
    • Strong engineering background with hands-on experience in system design development and implementation
    • Passion for automation and advanced manufacturing with a deep understanding of how to integrate automation into material flow strategies
    • Proven project leadership experience from concept to execution, including stakeholder coordination, risk management, and performance optimization
    • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously in a highly dynamic environment with evolving priorities
    • Strong analytical problem-solving and organizational skills with a data-driven approach to decision-making
