Leo is Amazons low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and weve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer will be a member of the Amazon Leo Inter-Satellite Link team, focusing on the design of the various mechanical ground support equipment (GSE), including assembly, alignment, and testing fixturing and tooling. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in performing design, analysis, sizing, and selection of mechanical mechanisms and components for development and production environments.

This is a hands-on role for a highly collaborative individual that combines superb technical analytical, and documentation capabilities to convert analytic trade studies to a qualified physical design, while optimizing to support high volume production and meeting cross discipline requirements.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities

We"re looking for a mechanical engineer with aerospace/defense background, and a demonstrated ability to get the right things done quickly and effectively. In this role, you will be expected to lead a variety of tasks and development projects, using knowledge and experience in understanding, collaborating and trading complex inputs from multiple other disciplines (Electrical, Optics, Process, Thermal, Dynamics, Mechanisms, Materials, Manufacturing, Assembly, and Test), to guide the team and arrive at a viable technical approach for both prototype and production level designs. Generate detailed 3D CAD assemblies/components and drawings as deliverables, specifically assembly, alignment and test GSE for satellite systems, using Siemens NX. Coordinate with other engineers, manufacturing and program management to ensure design intent and cost effectiveness of production are achieved. Develop documentation and presentation of materials for technical design reviews. Design and support test campaigns, both development and qualification/acceptance, for space and GSE hardware.

A day in the life

As a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, your tasks would vary between fixturing and tooling design, design reviews, building and qualifying. This is a cross-functional role requiring leadership skills, and constant interaction with multiple HW/SW design teams and end-users. You will tackle challenging, novel situations every day and have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams at Amazon in different locations. You will be expected to work with a team of top-notch engineers and collaborate with multiple other spacecraft design and integration teams. You should be comfortable with ambiguity, working in a fast-paced work environment, with a high degree of autonomy and relish the idea of solving problems that haven"t been solved at scale before. Along the way, we guarantee that you will learn a lot, have fun and make a positive impact on tens of millions of people.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
