AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

As a Sr. Mechanical Engineer for Amazon"s AMER Data Center Fleet, you will own and drive the overarching mechanical retrofit strategy across the AMER region operational portfolio.

You will serve as the strategic bridge between retrofit operations, product development, and new build design-ensuring that lessons learned from the existing fleet directly influence the next generation of mechanical cooling products and Basis of Design (BOD) documents.

Responsibilities

  • Own design reviews for high complexity retrofit projects across the AMER region, providing lifecycle engineering support from design through construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Define, communicate, and execute the long-term mechanical retrofit roadmap for the AMER data center fleet, prioritizing initiatives that unlock capacity, improve availability, and advance sustainability goals across hundreds of operational sites.
  • Act as the primary mechanical subject matter expert driving innovation in cooling capacity, efficiency, and sustainability-including emerging technologies such as liquid cooling, advanced air handling, and next-generation refrigerant systems.
  • Partner directly with product development and field engineering teams to translate fleet-wide retrofit insights, failure modes, and performance data into design requirements that shape new cooling technologies-ensuring products are purpose-built for both greenfield deployment and retrofit compatibility.
  • Collaborate with new data center build teams to embed retrofit-informed mechanical design standards into BOD documents, reducing future technical debt and ensuring Day 1 designs account for lifecycle adaptability and upgrade pathways.
  • Serve as the leading mechanical engineering voice across product development, new build design, field engineering, controls engineering, and operations-ensuring strategic coherence between what we build new, what we retrofit, and what we develop next.
  • Leverage fleet performance data, remediation trends, and field engineering team feedback to identify systemic mechanical challenges and architect proactive, portfolio-level solutions rather than reactive, site-level fixes.
  • Coordinate with internal and external design teams, server hardware, environmental health and safety, field engineering, and controls engineering to ensure design consistency and reliability.

Amazon"s vision is to be the world"s most customer-centric company, and this role is key to that vision. As a Fleet Remediation Data Center Retrofit Sr. Mechanical Engineer, you will be leading projects to fit out our data centers to meet ever-evolving customer needs as we continue expanding our fleet to hyper-scale.

As an ideal candidate you:

  • You combine deep data center cooling expertise with fleet-wide strategic vision-thinking in systems, not components
  • You thrive where technical depth meets cross-organizational influence and are energized by shaping mechanical strategy at unprecedented scale
  • Possess Strong Engineering Judgement and are able to provide design and recommendations despite uncertainty
  • Are detail and data oriented with familiarity with design/construction processes
  • Have experience managing engineering projects and engineering consultants.
  • Build trust and relationships with different stakeholders (e.g., Operations, Commissioning, Construction and Design)
  • Be inclined to get into the field to see things up close

We have an immediate opening for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer in the Fleet Remediation Engineering team. If you meet these qualifications, exude passion, and enjoy the challenge of innovative projects at hyper-scale, this job is for you!

A day in the life

Each day you will interact with different teams responsible for all aspects of the data centers. You will prioritize your activities to closely collaborate with capacity planning & delivery teams to identify opportunities to increase capacity utilization and develop designs for projects to unblock the additional capacity. You will have the opportunity to work on projects globally and lead first of kind designs for innovative solutions.

Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
