Description

Job Title: Sr Mechanical Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL 60638 
Duration: Contract to Hire
Pay Rate: $90k - $120k

Summary
The Sr. Mechanical Engineer designs mechanical components and assemblies in a cost-effective manner that meets customer specifications and necessary product performance for automated welding equipment and Additive Manufacturing Systems. This job description indicates the general nature and level of the work that is expected. It is not a comprehensive or all-inclusive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities. Other duties may be required.

Work Environment
Responsibilities associated with this position are typically performed in an office setting or designated administrative area and requires occasional visits to customer facilities, vendor facilities and trade shows/conferences. Movement through industrial or manufacturing areas is required along with the use of appropriate personal protective wear and consistent observance of established safety policies at all times.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Evaluate preliminary design at quote stage and determine feasibility of quote based on customer requirements and specifications
  • Assist Application Engineering with cost estimating in support if the quotation process
  • Size design based on computer programs/hand calculations and compare against previous designs
  • Use 3D modeling software to ensure proper mechanical fit and tolerance, based on customer specifications
  • Review design with Application Engineering, Welding and Manufacturing Departments.
  • Submit final design to customer for approval. Once approved, prepare drawing for release to Manufacturing
  • Continuously review products and suggest cost reductions for new and existing designs
  • Assist Manufacturing in preparing to build and during entire build process.
  • Provide Manufacturing with troubleshooting / debugging process
  • Once system is build, update drawings to reflect any changes or modifications
  • Create a list of replacement parts for machine manual
  • Complete final file of drawings, diagrams and pictures for Customer and Client archives
  • Prioritize tasks and track results to meet deadlines
  • Check drawings for accuracy
  • Write specifications for vendor purchases
  • Verify part number, revision levels and match requirements with Purchase Order versus original quote
  • Generate technical proposals
  • Perform calculations based on customer requirements to ensure meeting specifications
  • Maintain records – assign part numbers, files, drawing vault.
  • Respond to all customer questions in support of new programs and quotes
  • Check all received customer prints and maintain in Engineering file
  • Represent Engineering during all customer contacts.
  • Assist Applications Specialists with layouts and quotes

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in cost reduction activities
  • Experience using Creo/Pro-E modeling software
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience, specifically in assemblies for machine tools
  • Experience with electro-mechanical sensors, servo controls, large weldments and gear boxes preferred
